Baseball drops ninth-inning comeback against Northern Colorado

OMAHA, Neb. — A dramatic ninth-inning comeback wasn't enough for Omaha Baseball, as visiting Northern Colorado rallied for an 8-7 win in 10 innings Sunday afternoon at Tal Anderson Field.

It was the second consecutive extra-inning game between the two Summit League teams, as the Mavericks (8-13, 4-2) downed the Bears, 12-11, in 11 innings the previous night. Northern Colorado (5-21, 3-2) took two of three games in the series.

Trailing 7-3 in the ninth inning with two outs, the Mavericks rallied on an RBI single by Hayden Lewis, a two-run single by Edoardo Cornelli and a wild pitch that brought home pinch runner Eli Hoerner to tie the game at 7-7 and send it to extra innings.

After the Bears scored a run in the top of the 10th, the Mavericks appeared poised for another dramatic finish. With two on and one out, Nick Riggs singled to right, but Henry Zipay was gunned down at home plate. UNC's Brady Hudson earned the win (2-2), and Logan Borboa earned the save. Riggs, who came on in relief in the ninth, took the loss (1-3).

Four Mavericks had multi-hit games, including the Summit League's leading hitter Jackson Trout, who went 2 for 6, including his team-leading 17th double. Zipay went 2 for 4, Tyler Bishop 2 for 4, and Lewis went 2 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

The Mavericks travel the short distance to Charles Schwab Field Omaha on Tuesday to face Creighton at 6 p.m. CT. They resume Summit League play with three games Friday through Sunday in St. Paul, Minnesota, against St. Thomas before finishing a seven-game road stretch at South Dakota State.

Omaha returns to Tal Anderson Field on April 10 for the first of three games against Oral Roberts.
