Brody Sexton homered in his first game as a Maverick but the Omaha Baseball team dropped a 7-2 decision to Arizona State in the season opener night Friday in Phoenix, Arizona.
Henry Zipay, last season's Summit League player of the year, had two of Omaha's six hits. Omaha rallied in the late innings before the Sun Devils scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win.
Both starting pitchers threw well through the first half of Friday's game.
Arizona State starting pitcher Cole Carson retired the first 10 Mavericks before Zipay singled in the fourth.
Sexton put Omaha on the board in the next inning with his home run to left field, tying it at 1-1.
Omaha sophomore
Tanner Foertsch struck out six Sun Devils through the first four innings. Arizona State then used a three-hit rally to score twice in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.
ASU led 4-1 after six innings, but then Omaha put together scoring threats.
Omaha left the bases loaded in the seventh, then
Edoardo Cornelli,
Chase Diggins and Zipay singled to start the eighth to load the bases with no outs.
Jackson Trout brought home a run with a groundout, but a double play ended that threat.
Omaha and Arizona State continue their series at 2 p.m. CT Saturday.
