OMAHA, Neb. – Sophomore catcher Cardel Dick's grand slam capped an 11-run sixth inning to lift Omaha to a 14-11 come-from-behind win over South Dakota State in Summit League baseball Saturday at Tal Anderson Field. With the win over SDSU (15-30, 11-14), Omaha (19-25, 12-14) secures a spot in the four-team Summit League Championship at Tal Anderson Field, May 21-24 in Omaha.
The Mavs trailed 5-3 before they sent 14 batters to the plate against five Jackrabbits pitchers in the sixth inning. The 11 runs are the most scored in one inning this season for Omaha. Dick's homer, his third of the season, was his second hit in the inning and the biggest of five hits for the Mavs in the frame.
Jackson Trout (4-5, 3 R, 1 RBI, 2 DB) had his second four-hit game of the season and extended his hitting streak to 17 games, while fellow senior Henry Zipay (2-4, 1 R, 2 RBI) extended his on-base streak to 28 games with a pair of doubles.
Reliever Cameron Teinert (1-4) pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless, 2-hit relief, striking out five and walking one to earn his first win of the season. Omaha's fifth pitcher of the game, Oliver Mabee, threw the final 1 1/3 innings to earn his fourth save (1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K).
The Mavs will host SDSU in the rubber game of the three-game series on Mother's Day, Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT, Senior Day for Omaha baseball this season.
After SDSU scored in the top of the first, Omaha quickly manufactured a run in the bottom half. Trout singled followed by Henry Zipay's double to left, which was misplayed by the Jax, allowing Trout to score an unearned run. South Dakota State added a run in the second and three unearned runs in the third off Omaha starter Tanner Foertsch to take a 5-1 lead.
The Mavs began their comeback in the fifth against SDSU starter Caleb Duerr, as back-to-back doubles by Trout and Zipay brought in a pair to cut SDSU's lead to 5-3.
Then came Omaha's titanic 11-run sixth. Every batter in the Mavericks lineup reached base - at least once. The scoring started when Sam Beck walked with the bases loaded to cut the lead to one, followed by Eli Hoerner's two-run single to right which gave the Mavs the lead for the first time, 6-5. Jackson Trout had an RBI single and Tyler Bishop singled in a pair to make it 9-5. With two-outs, Dick delivered the second grand slam of his Omaha career, closing out the Mavs scoring.
With the win, Omaha moved 1/2 game ahead of SDSU in the Summit League standings and into a tie with NDSU for third place overall heading into Sunday's game at 12:00 p.m. CT at Tal Anderson Field. All Mavericks home games can be streamed on the Summit League Network. Omaha closes out the home portion of their regular season schedule Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. CT against crosstown rival Creighton, with the final three conference games of the season scheduled for May 15-17 at NDSU.
