OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha baseball broke open a tie game with a five-run 7th inning en route to an 11-5 win over Creighton University at Charles Schwab Field Tuesday. It was the third straight win for Omaha (16-23, 9-12 Summit League) and snapped a five-game losing streak against Creighton (28-13, 9-3 Big East).
The 11 runs are the most scored in a single game by Omaha at Charles Schwab Field against the Big East-leading Bluejays, eclipsed all-time in the series only by a 15-run effort at Rosenblatt Stadium on April 1, 2003. The Omaha win snaps Creighton's overall 8-game win streak and is their first win in Creighton's home park since May 10, 2022.
The mid-day, mid-week game drew 8,610 fans to Creighton's annual Kids Game for area students. With the season-series tied one game each, the crosstown rivals meet one more time this season, May 13 at Omaha's Tal Anderson Field.
The top of the Mavericks lineup continues producing at a torrid pace, with three hits from each of the one through four spots in the order (12-23, 7 R, 6 RBI).
Jackson Trout (3-6, 2 RBI, 2 R) started the game with a single, scoring on Tyler Bishop's 7th homer of the season to give Omaha a 2-0 lead. Trout's 16th multi-hit game extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Bishop (3-5, 4 RBI, 2 R) has hit safely in nine straight, going 14-72 in that stretch with six straight multi-hit games, including homers in three of the last four games.
The Mavs stretched the lead to 3-0 in the third with three singles to start the inning, including Henry Zipay's base hit, extending his on-base streak to 23 games. The senior Zipay (3-6, 1 R) is the Summit League's leading hitter, and played DH after starting the previous 38 games at third base. He is one of three Mavs to have started every game this season (Trout, Zipay, Bishop).
Starter Isaac Cychosz pitched two scoreless innings (2.0 IP, 1 H) before the Bluejays rallied for three runs against the Omaha bullpen to tie the game 3-3 in the fifth.
The game remained tied until the Mavericks exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh, all with two outs. Tyler Palmer (2-3, 2 R) singled and stole second to start the rally. After Cardel Dick walked, Stenger singled to score Palmer and give Omaha the 4-3 lead. Grant Sommers then walked to load the bases, followed by a walk issued to Drew Borner, bringing in Dick. An error by the Creighton second baseman opened the door for two more runs on Trout's 2-run single to make it 8-3 Omaha.
The Mavs extended the lead to 10-3 on sacrifice flies by Dick and Stenger. Creighton plated a pair of runs in the eighth on a two-run single by Nick Venteicher. Omaha closed out the scoring in the top of the ninth with another two-out rally. Zipay doubled and took third on an outfield miscue, giving him a team-leading 19 multi-hit games. Bishop singled him home to complete the scoring.
Senior Luke Gainer (6-3), the sixth of nine pitchers used by head coach Evan Porter, threw a scoreless inning to earn the win. Creighton reliever Shea Wendt took the loss (0-1).
The defensive highlight of the game was turned in by Blake Stenger to open up the bottom of the fourth, when the senior centerfielder made a diving catch to rob WIll MacLean of extra bases.
The Mavericks enter the week in fourth place in the Summit League standings, two games back of NDSU and 1/2 game ahead of SDSU. They visit league-leading St. Thomas for three games this weekend, May 2-4, in St. Paul, Minnesota. All Summit League games are broadcast on the Summit League Network. Omaha's non-league game at Kansas State scheduled for May 6 in Manhattan, Kansas has been canceled.
Omaha returns to Tal Anderson Field for their final homestand of the regular season, beginning with a three-game Summit League series May 9-11 against SDSU. Their final home game of the regular season is the rubber match of this year's set with Creighton, May 13th at 6:00 p.m. CT.
