OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha baseball bounced back in game two with a 5-2 win over Oral Roberts tonight to even the series at 1-1. Omaha moves to 13-21 overall and 7-10 in the Summit, while the Golden Eagles fall to 21-15 overall and 9-6 in the conference.
Omaha wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first after Oral Roberts went scoreless in the top half. With one down for Omaha,
Henry Zipay singled to center and then moved to second when
Mason Gaines walked following a fly out. Both runners later came around to score to make it 2-0 when
Blake Stenger doubled into the left center field gap for his second double of the series and third of the season.
The Mavericks added a run in the bottom of the second when
Drew Borner singled to left and advanced all the way to third on a miscue by the left fielder with one down. He later crossed the plate on
Tyler Palmer's RBI single up the middle to make it 3-0.
Oral Roberts cut the lead to two in the top of the third when it scored its first run off an RBI double to left center. The Golden Eagles tried to sneak in a second run on the play, but the runner was thrown out at home for the second out. The Oral Roberts threat came to an end when Maverick pitcher
Ben Weber struck out the final out of the frame.
Omaha kept the Golden Eagles off the board in the top half of the fourth before adding a run in the bottom half on a pair of hits from Palmer and
Jackson Trout. Palmer came around to score on the play to push the Mavericks' lead to 4-1 before the inning closed.
The Golden Eagles in the fifth added their second run of the contest on two hits to make it a 4-2 game.
Following a scoreless sixth for both teams, Omaha added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Zipay scored from second when
Tyler Bishop's RBI single up the middle made it a 5-2.
Maverick's reliever
Oliver Mabee did not allow a Golden Eagle to reach base over the final two innings. He finished the night with two strikeouts to earn his second save of the season after recording his first save exactly two months ago on Feb. 18.
Weber went seven strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out seven to improve to 2-4 on the year.
Zipay, Trout, Bishop, Stenger and Palmer all recorded two hits tonight. Both Zipay and Stenger tallied the team's only extra-base hits in the form of a pair of doubles. Stenger paced the team with two RBI while Zipay scored a pair of runs.
Omaha will look to claim the series tomorrow when it hosts Oral Roberts at 2 p.m. in the final game of the series.
