OMAHA, Neb. - A number of costly errors proved to be the Mavericks' undoing today as less than half of their runs allowed were earned in a 14-6 loss to SIUE in the home opener today.
Both teams end the day at 3-9 on the year.
Innings 1-5
Omaha starter
Ben Weber had his best outing yet, going 5+ innings and allowing only two earned runs and two hits. He got his day started with a pair of scoreless innings, getting some help from
Cardel Dick behind the dish as he caught strike three and immediately gunned down the runner at second to end the inning. After an unearned run crossed the plate on a double play in the third, another RBI groundout and an error allowed two more to score in the fourth.
The Mavericks got their first run of the day in the bottom of the fourth when
Kael Babin, who pinch ran for Masom Gaines after he got on with a double, stole third and came home to score on a wild pitch. Weber followed up with a scoreless top of the fifth, again getting some help from Dick who threw out his second runner of the day to end the inning.
Jackson Trout would make it a one-run game in the bottom half of the inning after sending one up the middle for an RBI single.
Innings 6-9
Heading into the top of the sixth down just 3-2, the Omaha defense wound up committing four errors to allow six unearned runs to cross the plate and suddenly make it 9-2. From there the Cougars would add five more runs over the next few innings, while the Mavericks got four more runs across the eighth and ninth as
Eli Hoerner and
Henry Zipay each drove in two.

- Weber has now gone at least five innings in each of his last two starts.
