SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Following a historic season that saw the team clinch its first Regular Season Title in the Division I era, the Mavericks took home five Summit League honors today headlined by
Marquel Sutton becoming the first player in Omaha history to be named Summit League Player of the Year and head coach
Chris Crutchfield being named Coach of the Year. Sutton and
JJ White both earned First Team All-Summit honors as well, while
Ja'Sean Glover has been named to the All-Defensive team.
Sutton has long been one of the favorites to take home Player of the Year, placing highly all season long in several categories. By season's end, he led the entire league in points (341), field goals (232), and free throws (88) while also placing top three in ppg (21.3), rebounds (123), rpg (7.7), FG% (.513). He was the only player in the league to rank in the top five in scoring, rebounding, and FG%, as well as the only one who ranks in the top five in just scoring and rebounding. In total Sutton had 15 double-digit scoring games in league play, including 12 with over 20 points and six in a row to end the season. He also had three double-doubles and posted an FG% above 60% six times. Marquel solidified his claim as Player of the Year in the penultimate game of the season, posting a career night vs. USD to clinch a share of the Regular Season Title when he scored a career-high 36 points with 12 rebounds, 14 field goals, and a 70.0 FG%. Sutton passed several career milestones during conference play too, reaching 1000 career points, 500 career rebounds, 400 career field goals, and 500 points in a single season for the first time in his career.
As for White, he turned in a career year as well, leading the league with 84 assists and 5.3 assists per game and being the only player in the league with over 60 assists and 4.0 apg. He also finished top 10 in points (281), ppg (17.6), FG% (.532), 3-PT FG% (.478), and FT% (.812). White finished the regular season with 15 double-digit scoring games, including six with at least 20 points. He had at least five assists six times, including a career-best 10 in a double-double performance at USD on Jan. 29. On Jan. 25 at ORU, he scored a career-high 35 points shooting 88.9% from the field, 80% from behind the arc, and 83.3% from the line with 15 free throws. Also broke into the top 10 on the program's all-time assists list this year with 340.
This is the first time being named All-Summit for both Sutton and White. Omaha is the only team in the league to have to First Team players this year.
Glover established himself as one of the top bench players and defensive weapons in the league this year, being assigned to guard one of the opposing team's top shooters every game. Ja'Sean led the team and placed 12th in the league with 15 steals and nine blocks, on top of having 32 defensive rebounds as well. He had his best defensive outing in a win vs. St. Thomas on Jan. 23 when he set career highs with four steals and two blocks.
This is the first career conference honor for Glover.
All of this would not have been possible if not for the leadership of coach Crutchfield. Joining the program after a last place finish in 2021-22, Crutchfield has completely rebuilt the team over the past three seasons all culminating in one of the best in program history this year. En route to clinching the team's first ever Regular Season Title as a Division I program, Crutchfield led the team to a 19-12 record with a 13-3 mark in the Summit League. Those 19 wins are the team's second most since transition to Division I, while the 13 Summit League wins are tied for the most in program history. Also occurring this year was the team's record-breaking nine-game winning streak, which not only ranks as the longest in the Division I era but the third longest in Omaha history. Facilitating this was an elite offense that ranked second in the league with 84.2 ppg, as well as the conference's best scoring margin at 7.3 points.
Crutchfield, one of just two coaches in the team's Division I history, now joins his predecessor Derrin Hansen as both have a Summit League Coach of the Year award.
