OMAHA, Neb. - In a much lower scoring day compared to the series opener, the Mavericks were in position to walk it off vs. St. Thomas today but fell just short in a 4-3 loss.
Omaha drops to 0-2 in the Summit League and 5-12 overall while St. Thomas moves to 2-0 in the conference and 8-6 overall.
Innings 1-3
The Tommies struck first again with a little small ball in the first with a couple of fielder's choices leading to a run. After St. Thomas tacked on another run in the second,
Brayden Curtis retired the side in order for the first scoreless inning of the day for the Mavericks.
In the bottom half of the inning,
Henry Zipay ripped a double down the left field line and was later brought home on a two-out double from
Tyler Bishop to get Omaha on the board.
Innings 4-6
Ben Weber would come in for the first inning of his length relief outing and tossed a scoreless fourth. St. Thomas would add another run in each of the next two innings the Mavericks were held hitless from the fourth through the sixth. Weber managed to limit the damage with three strikeouts in the fifth and sixth.
Innings 7-9
In the seventh, Weber worked around a lead-off double and a walk by getting the next batter to pop up followed by back-to-back swinging strikeouts. He would retire the next six batters over the final two innings, racking up another three strikeouts in the process.
Meanwhile, Omaha got within one run in the bottom of the eighth as
Tyler Palmer, who ended the top of the inning with a diving catch in right, singled home Bishop who led off the inning with a double. Then, Palmer managed to score all the way from first as he stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher, before coming home on a throwing error by the shortstop.
Down 4-3 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Omaha had the makings of a potential walk off as the next three batters all got on base. One final strikeout though from the Tommies would cut the comeback short.
