LEADING OFF
The (4-1) Omaha men's soccer team hosts Houston Christian University (1-3) in a non-league match Monday night at Caniglia Field at 7 p.m. CT.
The match will be televised on The Summit League Network. The Mavericks are idle until Tuesday, September 17 at home against Drake University at 7 p.m. CT.

QUICK KICKS

  • (RV) Omaha is looking to bounce back from their first loss of 2024, 2-0 at (RV) Grand Canyon.
  • The Mavericks started 4-0 for the first time since 2017 when they claimed the Summit League title and earned an NCAA bid.
  • The Mavericks received votes in the United Soccer Coaches National Rankings this past week, making them one of 14 schools just outside the nation's Top 25.
  • They were ranked 7th in last week's West Region poll, dropping one spot from week one (6) despite a pair of 1-0 victories over San Francisco and Loyola Chicago.
  • With a sweep of their recent home stand, Omaha has claimed three straight wins on the Caniglia Field pitch for the first time under head coach Donovan Dowling.
  • Defender Naz Astwood is the first Omaha Maverick to receive conference honors this season. After leading the Mavericks to those shutout wins and scoring the game winning goal against Loyola Chicago, the senior from Bermuda was named Summit League Peak Defensive Performer of the Week. It is his first career weekly league honor.
  • Theo Klein remains the sharp end of the spear for a deep Omaha attack. His team-leading three goals and eight points ranked 16th in NCAA DI through two weeks.
  • In four victories thus far, four different players have been credited with game-winning goals: Naz Astwood (Loyola), Theo Klein (San Francisco), Mathis Pilon St-Louis (Florida Atlantic) and Brett Perkins (Oakland).

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES

  • Houston Christian (1-4) of the Ohio Valley Conference lost 1-0 Friday night in Des Moines to Drake University.
  • Houston Christian has been led by Ethan Giwa-McNeil (2 goals, 4 points).
  • As a team, six players have scored seven goals. In addition to Giwa-McNeil, Ryan Okerayi, Freddy Ferguson, Kaone Kalagano, Sebastian Rodriguez and D'Alessandro Herrera have one goal each.
  • They are 1-2 at home and 0-2 on the road with losses at Gonzaga (2-1) and Drake (1-0) on their current road trip.

MAVERICKS-HUSKIES HISTORY

  • The schools have met twice, including a 4-1 loss last year in Houston (8/27/23). In that match, Omaha scored first before the Huslies reeled off four unanswered goals. A major factor in the match came in the 16th minute when goalkeeper Nathanael Sallah was called for a red card.
  • The Mavericks claimed a 1-0 win on neutral ground in Edinburg, Texas in the UTRGV Invitational (9/1/17) .
