SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The No.1 Omaha Mavericks took home 12 All-Summit awards today, headlined by Head Coach
Evan Porter earning his second career Coach of the Year award.
Matt Goetzmann becomes the first Maverick ever to be named Defensive Player of the Year, on top of making First Team All-Summit along with
Harrison Kreiling. Meanwhile,
Tyler Bishop,
Henry Zipay,
Drew Lechnir,
Noah Greise, and
Luke Gainer all took home Second Team honors, and
Cardel Dick,
Trent Burkhalter, and
Zach Lechnir earned Honorable Mentions.
Omaha's 12 honorees are a new program high, topping the 10 All-Summit honors earned in the 2014 and 2019 seasons.
For Porter, he led the Mavericks to a league-high 16 conference wins and a No. 1 seed in the Summit League Tournament after bringing in 20 newcomers and having to replace seven different starters from the 2023 roster.
Goetzmann was an easy choice for Defensive Player of the Year after making highlight reel plays in the outfield on a daily basis, finishing with a .984 fielding percentage on 64 chances. He was also one of the league's top hitters, batting .314 with a .926 OPS and leading the league with three triples, 22 walks, and 11 steals. He also finished in the top 10 in runs (29), hits (37), and doubles (five). At one point he also had an 11-game hitting streak and an 18-game on-base streak. Already a conference player of the week and player of the month, this is Goetzmann's first ever First Team All-Summit Honor.
For Kreiling, in his fourth and final season with Omaha, he makes First Team All-Summit for the first time after posting the fourth lowest ERA among all starters at 3.15. His 51 strikeouts and .225 BAA both rank in the top 10 as well. He was recently named the final pitcher of the week of the season after tossing 5.2 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts in a win over SDSU that earned Omaha the No. 1 seed. This is his second All-Summit accolade after taking home an Honorable Mention last year.
Heading up the Second Team honorees is Bishop who, in his first season in Omaha, hit .333 and finished in the top 10 in hits (41) doubles (nine), OPS (1.005), runs (27), triples (two), home runs (six), and RBIs (27). Earlier in the season he was named conference and national player of the week after going 6-for-6 with seven RBIs, two home runs, and a cycle vs. SDSU.
Meanwhile, Zipay, in his third year with the team, had his best season yet as he led the Mavericks with a .341 AVG and was top 10 in the league in OPS (.980). Like Zipay, fellow veteran Greise earned Second Team honors after serving as the team's primary DH and hitting .261 with a .736 OPS, 16 RBIs, 15 runs, and 10 XBHs. As for,
Drew Lechnir, he also earned a player of the week award and finished top 10 in the league with 41 hits. He also batted .298 with an .844 OPS and five home runs. This is the first All-Summit award for these three.
The lone Omaha pitcher to earn Second Team honors is Gainer, who paced all relievers with a .183 BAA and was top three in ERA (2.48), saves (four), and strikeouts (35). This is his first All-Summit award after previously taking home pitcher of the week honors back in April.
As for the Honorable Mentions,
Zach Lechnir earned his first All-Summit accolade after batting .284 with a .717 OPS. At one point, he recorded a double in five straight games. Newcomers Dick and Burkhalter were also recognized for their accomplishments, with the former racking up 24 RBIs, seven XBHs, and throwing out three baserunners, and the latter posting a team-high .995 fielding percentage along with eight XBHs and 15 runs scored.
