OMAHA, Neb. - In their second of three meetings with Creighton this year, the Mavericks were mere inches away from a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth as they rallied late but came up just short against their crosstown rival as they were bested 7-6.
Omaha drops to 8-21 on the season, while the Bluejays improve to 25-5.
Innings 1-3
Making his first career start,
Carter Navin got the Mavericks started with two scoreless innings. He stranded runners on second and third in the top of the first after punching out his first batter of the night, before keeping Creighton off the board in the second after they loaded the bases.
Both teams got on the board in the third, with Cuyler Zukowski singling home a run in the top of the inning before
Cardel Dick tied it up for Omaha after sneaking one between the third baseman and shortstop.
Innings 4-6
The Bluejays added two more runs in the top of the fourth and had a chance to grow their lead in the fifth, but
Matt Goetzmann made another highlight reel play in center as he dove for the snow cone catch to end the inning.
Innings 7-9
In the eighth, the Bluejays tacked on two more runs to make it 7-1. In the bottom of the inning, Omaha cut their lead to four runs as
Henry Zipay doubled to get runners on second and third, setting up
Drew Lechnir for a two-run double over the left fielder's head.
Tyler Bishop followed up with an RBI single, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double to end the inning.
Finally, in the bottom of the ninth, still trailing by three, the Mavericks drew three walks to quickly load the bases with one out. Then,
Trent Burkhalter came up and sent one all the way to the wall in dead center, only to have to settle for a sac fly as it fell just a few inches short of a home run. Zipay was next up and sent the first pitch he saw through the right side to cut Creighton's lead to one. That was all Omaha would get, though, as the Bluejays just barely hung on to take the second game of the season series.
