Bishop Hits for the Cycle as Mavericks Score 21 vs. SDSU

OMAHA, Neb. - Led by one of the greatest individual performances in program history by Tyler Bishop, the Mavericks exploded on offense today, breaking several records to best South Dakota State 21-15 to even in the series. This is just the third time in the program's division I history that the team has topped 20 runs in a game.

Omaha is back at .500 in the Summit League at 7-7 and is now 9-22 overall. As for the Jackrabbits, they remain half a game ahead of the Mavericks in the standings at 7-6 in league play and 15-17 overall.

The Mavericks broke or tied four team records today. Their 24 hits and seven doubles are both tied for the team's highest total ever, while Omaha's 11 XBHs today are a new record. Likewise, the Mavericks 21 runs are the most ever scored at Tal Anderson field.

As for Bishop, he ended his day batting 6-for-6 with seven RBIs, six runs, two home runs, and a cycle, making him the first Maverick in history to go 6-for-6 in a game and the first to ever score six runs in a game. He is also the first Maverick to hit for the cycle in the D1 era and is the first overall since Chris Weimer back on February 29, 2008 at Emporia. Bishop's seven RBIs are tied for the most in the D1 era too.

Innings 1-3
SDSU started off the day with two quick runs in the top of the first, only for a Drew Lechnir solo shot and a Noah Greise sac fly to immediately tie things up in the bottom of the inning. The Jackrabbits would then retake the lead the next inning off a solo home run from Reece Anderson, before going up 4-2 in the third on an RBI single from Cade Stuff.

The Mavericks responded in the bottom of the inning with four runs. Bishop, who tripled and scored on Greise's sacrifice in the first, cranked a two-run homer to left to once again tie the game at 4-4. Jackson Trout followed up by beating out an infield single to give Omaha its first lead of the day and, after stealing second, came around to score on a single from Cardel Dick.

Innings 4-6
The offensive barrage continued for SDSU in the fourth as they scored another five runs after a grand slam from Jordan Sagedahl and the team's third home run  from Dawson Perry. Just like in the first and third, though, Omaha again managed to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Henry Zipay and Matt Goetzmann got the rally started with back-to-back doubles, followed by the third hit and third RBI of the game from Bishop to make it 9-8. Trout would be the one to tie it up thanks to a throwing error by the third baseman.

After the leadoff man reached on an error, Joe Hackmann threw Omaha's first scoreless inning in the fifth as he struck out the next three batters in order. Sagedahl would break the tie in the sixth with his second and the team's fourth home run of the afternoon. Following two more Jackrabbit runs, the Mavericks cut their lead down to one as Bishop crushed his second two-run homer of the day in the bottom of the sixth.

Innings 7-9
The scoring did not slow down in the later innings as SDSU grew their lead to 15-11 after adding another three runs in the top of the seventh.

Omaha would respond with its biggest inning yet as 14 batters came to the plate to score seven runs and make it 19-15. After Zach Lechnir and Zipay scored on back-to-back wild pitches, Bishop completed the cycle with a two-run double to tie up the game. Dick then gave the Mavericks the lead for good with a bases-clearing double, before Zach Lechnir capped off the inning with a sac fly.

Bishop got his sixth hit and would score his sixth run in the eighth on a sacrifice from Trout to officially put Omaha at 20 runs. The 21st and final run would come on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Zipay. All that was left was for Luke Gainer, who came in with no outs in the sixth, to finish off the game with a scoreless eighth and ninth.
