Mavericks Fall to Portland in Home Opener

OMAHA, Neb. - In their first home game of the season, the Mavericks challenged late but could not complete the comeback as they were defeated 7-5 by Portland.

Omaha is now 0-11 on the season, while the Pilots improve to 7-3.

Innings 1-3
After Brayden Curtis got out of a jam in the top of the first with his second strikeout, Omaha quickly took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the inning as the first four Mavericks all reached base, culminating in a two-run double from Grant Sommers. Trent Burkhalter added the third run with a sac fly to bring home Tyler Palmer.

The next inning, however, Portland took advantage of an error and a catcher's interference call to load the bases and set up Jake Holcroft for a two-out grand slam, tagging Curtis for four unearned runs. The Pilots picked up another run in the third on a sac fly.

Innings 4-6
Following a 1-2-3 inning for Joe Hackmann in the fourth, Ethan Louthan came in for his first of three innings in the top of the fifth and allowed an unearned run after another Mavericks error. He immediately recovered, though, retiring the side in order in the sixth.

Innings 7-9
Louthan had another strong inning in the seventh, striking out all three batters he faced. Omaha then got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh. Haiden Hunt, Bishop, and Sommers led off the inning with three-straight singles, before Noah Greise came off the bench and sent the first pitch he saw to left center to make it 7-4. Drew Lechnir followed up with the fifth single of the inning to cut the deficit to two.

Luke Gainer completely shut down the Pilots over the final 1.1 innings, coming in with two outs in the eighth and striking out his only batter, before striking out the side in the ninth. Omaha had a chance to extend the game in the bottom of the ninth, with Burkhalter and Lechnir each singling, but Portland managed to escape the inning unscathed to take the game.

Eight different Mavericks got a hit today, with Hunt, Sommers, and Lechnir all getting three.
