Mavericks Earn Two Big Wins on Day Two of the ASU Invitational

Tempe, AZ- The Omaha Mavericks swept day two beating James Madison 4-2 and picking up a big win against Pac-12 opponent Arizona State 3-1. 

The Mavericks improve to a 13-7 overall record on the campaign.  

Game One: Omaha 4, James Madison 2
How It Happened

    - Omaha opened with a strong defensive presence where they quickly shut down the first three batters in the lineup. 
    - In the top of the second, JMU scored two runs off a single to third base and a double to center field. 
    - Haley Wilwerding reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop allowing Sydney Ross to score, making it just 2-1 in the bottom of the second. 
    - In the fifth, Maggie O'Brien tied the game at two after Ross hit a single to left field. 
    - O'Brien had a two-RBI single down the left field line, putting Omaha ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth. 
    - The Mavericks locked down defensively in the top of the seventh only allowing one hit by JMU to ultimately take the win. 

Game Notes
    - O'Brien batted a .500 in game one after recording two hits in her four at-bats. She also scored one run and had two RBIs. 
    - Ross batted a 1.000 during her two at-bats in addition to scoring one run and one RBI. 
    - Marra Cramer and Jenna Marshall each recorded one run and Haley Wilwerding recorded one RBI. 
    - Kamryn Meyer came in as relief, where she pitched four innings to earn the win. Meyer didn't allow a single run and made four strikeouts. With 13 batters she only allowed two hits and two walks. 
    
Game Two: Omaha 3, Arizona State 1
How It Happened

    - Kamryn Meyer opened strong with back-to-back strikeouts.
    - In the top of the second, Cramer hit a RBI triple down the first base line sending in Wilwerding. 
    - Lynsey Tucker hit a single to third base allowing Cramer to score from third, giving Omaha a 2-0 lead.
    - In the bottom of the third, the ASU batter made it first on a drop third strike. The runner would eventually make it home after the next batter hit a triple to left field, making it 2-1.   
    - Meyer had three straight strikeouts in the bottom of the fourth to keep Arizona State at 1. 
    - Ross started the top of the sixth with a double to left field. Alex Olson had a double to right center that advanced Ross home making it 3-1. 
    - In the bottom of the seventh ASU put in a pinch hitter with two out. On a 3-2 count ASU's batter sent the ball to center field. Cramer called game with a stellar throw to second where O'Brien tagged the runner out. 
        
Game Notes
    - Meyer had an outstanding performance pitching the complete seven innings. She had 10 strikeouts while only allowing six hits, one run, and two walks. 
    - Meyer picked up her eighth win, going 8-3 on the season. 
    - Tucker, Cramer, and Olson each had one hit that resulted in an RBI.
    - Cramer, Wilwerding, and Ross each recorded a run.
    - Ross had a team-high nine putouts. 
     
Up Next
The Mavericks will play in one more game tomorrow morning where they will take on UC San Diego at 11:30 a.m.
