The Omaha Mavericks fall in tonight's NCHC playoff opener to Colorado College 4-3 in OT.
Omaha jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second period behind goals from
Ty Mueller,
Jack Randl and
Jacob Slipec. Mueller's 10th goal of the season beat Kaidan Mbereko 5-hole just 5:30 into the second period. 21 seconds later,
Jack Randl scored his team-high 13th goal of the campaign with laser of a snapshot, to beat Mbereko high glove side. Slipec's second goal of the season came at 13:24 of the period with a nice snapshot to beat the CC netminder far-side.
CC would claw their way back 49 seconds later with a power play goal that was tipped out front of
Simon Latkoczy's cage. The Tigers pulled within one with a rebound goal on a five-minute power play. The Mavericks did a good job of killing the remaining 3:38 of the man advantage.
With 49 seconds left in regulation, puck luck didn't go the Mavericks way again when the game-tying goal trickled home through a heap of bodies out front.
The Mavericks had their opportunities in the overtime period including a breakaway chance from
Zach Urdahl who wasn't able to solve Kaidan Mbereko.
CC's game winner, once again not on a clean shot, was put home at 11:53 of the first OT period.
Omaha will look to draw even tomorrow night in game two of this quarterfinal battle with the Tigers. Puck set to drop at 7:07 p.m. CT.
