EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Mavericks won their second game in a row today when they topped SIUE 2-1 to take the series.
Omaha ends the week at 2-12 now, as the Cougars slide to 3-13.
Innings 1-3
The Mavericks struck first again today when an error extended the second inning and allowed
Trent Burkhalter to capitalize with a two-out RBI single. With the lead in hand,
Preston Tenney fired his first 1-2-3 inning of the day in the second after previously working around a double in the first. Looking incredibly sharp on the mound, he would need only 29 pitches to get through the first three innings.
Innings 4-6
Tenney tossed two more scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth and struck out two more batters to end his day. He only needed 60 pitches to get through five innings of work. Meanwhile, Omaha plated another run in the top of the fifth after
Henry Zipay doubled down the right field line and came around to score on a sac fly from
Haiden Hunt.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Joe Hackmann came in and quickly allowed the leadoff men to get on and reach second and third with no outs. Two quick groundouts shifted the tied of the inning, before a walk loaded the bases. Hackmann managed to get out of the inning completely unscathed as he caught the last batter looking.
Innings 7-9
After a bumpy sixth, Hackmann recovered and retired the side in order in the seventh.
Luke Gainer followed up by stranding a leadoff double in the eighth with a pair of swinging strikeouts to end the inning. Though he would allow the Cougars' first run of the day in the bottom of the ninth, it was not enough to shake him as Gainer set down the final two batters to secure the save and the win.
Inside the Box Score
Tenney lowers his season ERA to an even 1.00 to lead the Mavericks pitching staff.
Burkhalter has now driven in a run in four straight games, totaling seven RBIs and going 6-for-14 at the plate.
