Omaha, Neb. – The Omaha Mavericks finish the regular season with a big 79-62 win over St. Thomas on senior night.
Omaha closed the regular season with a 7-22 overall record and went 3-13 in conference play.
Leaders For Omaha
Polina Nikulochkina paced the Mavericks tonight with 20 points, going 6-of-10 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line. Also hitting double-digits tonight were seniors
Aaliyah Stanley (18) and
Deanay Watson (12).
Cora Olsen led with seven rebounds and five steals.
Grace Cave and
Kennedi Grant each added three assists.
Leaders for St. Thomas
Jo Langbehn led the Tommies with 22 points, going 10-of-12 from the field, and had a team-high eight rebounds.
Team Stats
Omaha outshot the St. Thomas on the field 53.8% (28-of-52) to 35.7% (25-of-70). The Mavericks also shot better from the arc, going 35.3% (6-of-17) to just 9.1% (3-of-33). Omaha also outshot on the free throw line 81.0% (17-of-21) to 75% (9-of-12).
Inside the First Quarter
The Mavericks had a hot start to the game. P. Nikulochkina made the first basket at 9:34. At 6:16 the Mavericks were down 8-4 but Watson made a hook shot in the paint that would inevitably start the Mavericks 19-point scoring run. Stanley added six straight points in that run, to put the Mavericks back on top.
The Tommies had a promising start after winning the jump ball. They missed their first jump shot but got the offensive rebound but turned the ball over on the rebound, giving Omaha their first possession. After giving up 19 straight points to the Mavericks, they finally broke it up after a technical foul on Omaha sent them to the line where they picked up one point.
Inside the Second Quarter
The Mavericks maintained a double-digit gap with the Tommie for the majority of the quarter. The teams shot the same amount of points on the field, but Omaha pulled ahead with five extra free throws.
Even though the Mavericks turned the ball over seven times, the Tommies couldn't get the ball to sink as they went just 4-of-15 from the field and 1-of-7 from the arc.
Inside the Third Quarter
The Mavericks continued to cruise through the third, keeping that generous gap. A fast break layup by Watson gave Omaha their biggest lead of the 21 with 3:55 remaining in the third.
The Mavericks got into some foul trouble at the end of the third, giving the Tommies a 12-point scoring run where they closed their deficit to nine at the end of the quarter.
Inside the Fourth Quarter
The Mavericks shot back up to a 14-point lead in the fourth with 3:35 remaining. With 33 seconds on the clock,
Ana Nikulochkina was subbed in and fouled to go sending her to the free-throw line. The senior, in her last seconds on the court, made both of the free throws, giving Omaha their 79-62 final score.
