LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Mavericks will continue to look for their first win of the year as they were defeated 6-0 at Long Beach State on Saturday.
Omaha drops to 0-5 to start the 2024 season, while the Dirtbags are still undefeated at 4-0-1.
Innings 1-5
In each of the first three innings Omaha got at least one man into scoring position, but failed to bring them home each time. In the first,
Noah Greise singled up the middle for his first of the year and advanced to second after
Joel Benes was hit by a pitch. Then, in the second
Zach Lechnir doubled to left and made it to third after his brother
Drew Lechnir beat out an infield single. Finally, in the third,
Matt Goetzmann was hit by a pitch and stole second, only to be left stranded like Greise and Lechnir.
On the mound,
Charlie Bell allowed four earned runs through an up and down five innings. After working around an error in a scoreless first, another error in the second allowed three runs to score, two being unearned. He followed this up with a 1-2-3 third featuring back-to-back swinging strikeouts to end the inning, but was tagged for three more runs over the next two innings.
Innings 6-9
Following a scoreless sixth inning, the Mavericks had their best chance yet to score in the top of the seventh, as
Trent Burkhalter drew a leadoff walk before the Lechnir brothers both reached base as well to load them up. Unfortunately, the next two Mavericks both went down swinging to end the inning.
Again in the top of the eighth Omaha had the makings of a two-out rally after
Tyler Bishop singles and Burkhalter walked, but again could not bring either around to score in what proved to be their final time getting men on base.
Inside the Box Score
Reed Scott pitched his first scoreless relief inning tonight, while
Nick Scanlon tossed two scoreless with three strikeouts.
In his first start of the year, Greise recorded two hits.
