Mavericks Wrap Up Series at ASU

JONESBORO, Ark. - The Mavericks dropped the third and final game of their opening series at Arkansas State 12-0 on Sunday.

Omaha begins the 2024 season at 0-3, while the Red Wolves go up 3-0.

Innings 1-5
The Mavericks quickly got two on with nobody out in the top of the first, but despite getting both batters into scoring position, Arkansas State starter Dylan Heine got out of the inning unscathed. Later, in the third, Matt Goetzmann and Haiden Hunt both got on with the team's first hits of the day, only for both to be left stranded.

Meanwhile, making his first career start, Brayden Curtis had an up and down day, allowing one run in the first on an RBI groundout, before keeping the Red Wolves off the board in the second, even recording his first career strikeout. Though he was tagged for two more runs in the third, he stranded runners at second and third thanks to his third punch out of the day.

Curtis ended his day after a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth, being relieved by Carter Navin who worked around a walk and stolen base to throw a scoreless fifth.

Innings 6-9
The next inning, Omaha got its best chance to score yet as Trent Burkhalter and Tyler Bishop led off the inning with back-to-back singles to knock out Heine, but the rally was cut short as the next three Mavericks were set down in order.

ASU would blow the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth by scoring five more runs to go up 8-0. The Red Wolves would get four more over the next two innings and hold Omaha scoreless to complete the sweep.

Inside the Box Score
In his first career start, Curtis went four innings, allowing three runs and striking out three.

Cardel Dick is the only Maverick to record a hit in all three games of the series.

The Mavericks head to sunny California next week when they open a three-game series at Long Beach State on Friday at 8 p.m. (CT).
