2024 Summit League Volleyball honors released

Nov 23, 2024

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Ahead of the upcoming Summit League Volleyball Championship in Kansas City, Mo. beginning Sunday, Nov. 24, the 2024 Summit League volleyball honors were released by the conference office Saturday morning.

Graduate student middle blocker McKenna Ruch and junior outside hitter Kali Jurgensmeier earned spots on the All-League Team, while senior outside hitter Shayla McCormick was named an Honorable Mention All-Summit League, as voted by the Summit League head coaches.

The league's top honors included: South Dakota State's Sylvie Zgonc (Player of the Year); St. Thomas' Morgan Kealy (Setter of the Year); South Dakota's Kamryn Farris (Defensive Player of the Year) and Freshman of the Year Madison Burr of South Dakota State. South Dakota State head coach Dan Georgalas was voted by his peers as Summit League Coach of the Year.

Now a three-time All-League Team honoree, Ruch continued to dominant for Omaha volleyball in her final season with the Mavericks. Ruch crossed the 1,000-kill plateau earlier in the campaign and enters the conference tournament with 1,153 kills over five seasons at Omaha. Her 21 kills against Denver on Nov. 21 set a career-high, as did her seven service aces at St. Thomas on Nov. 2. The Omaha native also tallied five solo blocks in a Summit League matchup against Oral Roberts on Nov. 10.

In 102 sets over 27 matches so far this season, Ruch totaled 311 kills, a personal single-season best, and hit .365, her best attack percentage at Omaha. Adding 19 solo blocks and 89 block assists, Ruch accumulated a staggering 399.5 points and counting in 2024. She finished the regular season with 25 aces. Ruch totaled double-digit kills in 17 contests in 2024, including a double-double early in non-conference action with 18 kills and 14 digs against then-(RV) Washington State on Sept. 1.

Ruch's .442 conference hitting percentage leads the Summit League, as do her 75 total blocks. The 2023 Summit League Championship MVP sits in the Summit League top 10 in points (255.5) and kills (3.39) in league matches.

Ruch was named Co-Offensive Peak Performer of the Week to close-out the regular season on Nov. 20, her second time earning the offensive honor and sixth overall Summit League weekly nod.

Hailing from Wahoo, Neb., Jurgensmeier earns her first spot on the All-League Team after being named to the Summit League All-Freshman Team in 2022. The Summit League Offensive Peak Performer of the Week on Nov. 5 averaged 3.21 kills per set in 2024 to total 324 in the regular season, the best of any Maverick this season. Jurgensmeier set new career-highs this season in kills (19), digs (15) and aces (3) in non-league action before notching a career-high nine blocks against Denver on Oct. 17. She also crushed a career-best .720 hitting percentage against North Dakota State on Oct. 26. Her 378.5 points rank only behind Ruch for the team-high.

Jurgensmeier sits in the top 10 among Summit League players in points (fifth), hitting percentage (sixth) and kills (fifth).

McCormick earns her third Summit League postseason recognition after being named Honorable Mention All-Summit. The Omaha product joined the 1,000 kills club this season, the 22nd Maverick all-time to achieve the feat. Making the start in all but one match this season, McCormick etched 223 kills and dished 26 assists in 26 matches played. Over 95 sets, McCormick knocked in 28 aces and received more than 280 digs. McCormick was a mainstay on the Mavericks' block in the regular season with four solo blocks and 42 block assists, totaling 46 total blocks to cap her final regular season with 285.0 points.

A two-time Summit League All-Tournament Team honoree, McCormick earned Summit League All-League Team honors in 2022 and 2023.
