Scouting the Southern Utah Thunderbirds
The Thunderbirds are 3-0 to open their 2024-25 campaign, taking wis from Western New Mexico 98-68), Florida International (80-75), and Bethesda University of California (107-54). Last year, SUU went 10-21 and missed the WAC Tournament.
Senior guard Hercy Miller has been as good as you can hope off the bench as the Louisville transfer currently leads SUU in scoring at 13.7 ppg (41 points) and is also shooting 57.9% from the field. He is one of four Thunderbirds averaging at least 10 ppg and shooting above .500.
Also included in that group are the team's top rebounders Jamari Sibley (7.0 rpg, 14 total) and Tavi Jackson (5.0 rpg, 15 total). On top of that, Sibley is tied for the team lead in blocks with four, while Jackson paces SUU with five steals. Also worthy of note is sophomore forward Brock Felder who currently boasts a 92.3 FG% after going 12-for-13 through three games.
Head Coach Rob Jeter comes into his second year with Southern Utah and 16th overall after a three-year stint at former Summit League school Western Illinois (2020-23) and 11 years with Milwaukee (2005-16). He just got back to .500 in his career earlier this week (236-236). He previously worked as an assistant at Minnesota and UNLV and has totaled seven NCAA Tournament appearances and five conference coach of the year awards.
