The Omaha Mavericks came up just short in tonight's Desert Hockey Classic final falling to No. 12 Arizona State 2-1 in overtime. ASU's game winning tally came 1:43 into the extra frame as Kyle Smolen took advantage of a breakaway to score the tournament winner.

Tanner Ludtke got things started for the Mavericks tonight when he fired a snapshot top left corner to take a 1-0 lead with 5:16 left in the 1st period.

ASU's equalizer came 2:10 into the third period. The Mavericks did a good job of weathering some storms throughout the final period including a couple big time saves from
Simon Latkoczy to get to the overtime period. The Slovakian netminder turned aside 33 of the 35 shots he faced tonight which ties his season high.
Tonight's defeat marks just the second time this season Omaha has fallen in the second game of the weekend. They move to 6-2-1 on the campaign in Saturday showdowns. It's also the first loss of the season for the Mavericks in one-goal games and puts them at 8-1-0 on the year.
Omaha now turns their sights on North Dakota next weekend in Grand Forks. It'll be NCHC play the rest of the way for the Mavericks. At the halfway point of the season, Omaha sits at 10-6-2 on the campaign.
