The Omaha Mavericks secured a big four points tonight on the weekend against the No. 15/14 St. Cloud State Huskies. Omaha secured the extra NCHC point by defeating the Huskies 1-0 in a shootout.
Ty Mueller was the first Maverick up in the shootout tonight. The Vancouver Canucks draft pick made the most of his attempt as he buried his second shootout goal of the season with a nasty deke. Graduate goaltender
Seth Eisele solidified his spectacular night by stopping SCSU's leading goal scorer Veeti Miettinen, Kyler Kupka and Adam Ingram.
The Mavericks found themselves trailing in the first period after a shot from SCSU's Zach Okabe just barely trickled over the goal line to give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead, 3:56 in. For the second night in a row, the Mavericks erased a deficit to draw even with SCSU.
At 9:30 of the second period on the power play, Omaha got a bit of puck luck on their game tying goal.
Matt Miller attempted a cross ice pass on an odd man rush that ricocheted off a Husky players skate and directly into the back of the net.
Ty Mueller and
Tanner Ludtke tallied the helpers.
The Mavericks and Huskies would battle back and forth for the remainder of regulation with Omaha controlling the play most of the way. Neither team was unable to break the deadlock in regulation and the extra five-minute overtime period.
The Mavericks return home next weekend and will look to keep the momentum rolling when they welcome the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs to Baxter Arena. Friday night's tilt will be in the national spotlight on CBS Sports Network with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
