BROOKINGS, S.D. - The Mavericks' three-game conference winning streak came to an end on Thursday as they were narrowly bested 90-87 by South Dakota State after coming up just short of a last-second comeback.
Omaha is now tied for second in the Summit League at 10-10 on the season and 3-2 in the conference, while the Jackrabbits improve to 10-9 and move ahead of the Mavericks in the standings at 3-1 in league play.
Leaders for Omaha
Marquel Sutton turned in one of his best performances yet as he posted his second double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He was Omaha's top shooter at 10-for-15 from the field.
Frankie Fidler matched Sutton with 20 points, going 12-for-12 from the line, and pulled down eight boards.
JJ White (17 points) and
Tony Osburn (13 points) both scored double figures as well, with Osburn leading the team with three baskets from behind the arc.
Leaders for South Dakota State
The Jackrabbits had five double-digit scorers tonight, led by Zeke Mayo who shot 7-for-13 with four three-pointers to finish with 21 points. Charlie Easley just missed a double-double with 17 points and a team-leading nine rebounds.
Team Stats
While the Jackrabbits outshot Omaha 53.4% to 44.3% on FG%, Omaha made up the difference with a superior FT% of 88.5% to 78.3%. A slight edge in rebounding also went in Omaha's favor at 35-32, as did a significant 8-2 advantage on steals.
Inside the First Half
Down 4-0 to begin the night, Osburn soon got the Mavericks started with back-to-back threes at 17:24 and 16:40 to briefly put them in front. After a 9-0 Jackrabbit run later in the period put Omaha into a 15-8 hole, a driving layup from White off an offensive board from
Ja'Sean Glover got the Mavericks back on the board with 12:31 to go. With just under 10 minutes left, White made two from the line to get Omaha back within four at 20-16.
Both teams would match each other bucket for bucket over the next few minutes, including one from
Grant Stubblefield who came off the bench and immediately drained a three at 8:25. Stubblefield would later break the stalemate with another triple, followed by a layup from Sutton and the first three of the night from Fidler to put the Mavericks back on top 31-29 with 3:39 remaining.
Fidler made it 36-32 with another three at the two-minute mark, but SDSU responded with nine unanswered to retake the lead. Ultimately, White sent Omaha to halftime down by just two with a buzzer beater from behind the arc.
Inside the Second Half
For the first 11 minutes of the half, Sutton was the only Maverick to make a field goal. He got his first off a double spin move in the paint at 16:21, before making another at 13:32 when he got a steal off an SDSU inbound and promptly capitalized with a layup. With 11 left to play, Sutton made his third on another layup, followed by his fourth field goal of the half on a jumper at 9:34.
30 seconds later, Osburn became the first Maverick beside Sutton to make a field goal when he nailed his third triple of the game. Sutton continued to provide the bulk of Omaha's scoring, though, making a second-chance dunk with just under six minutes left to keep the deficit to single digits.
As the Mavericks continued to slowly chip away at SDSU's lead, Glover got Omaha within four with 3:38 remaining after he made his first three-pointer of the night. Sutton would cut the lead to just three 20 seconds later when he made another second-chance dunk. With under a minute to go, Sutton made it a two-point game with his eight bucket of the half, before White cut the lead to one with his second three-pointer with 14 seconds left. In the end that would be as close as it would get, however, as the Jackrabbits just managed to hang on for the win.

- Sutton's two double-doubles match Fidler's total on the season.
