Omaha, Neb. -- The Omaha Mavericks recorded their first conference win with a 3-0 shutout over the Western Illinois Leathernecks. The Mavericks got the early lead and rolled with that momentum for the remainder of the match.
Omaha improves to a 4-3-2 overall record and is now 1-0-1 in Summit League Play. With the win tonight the Mavericks went undefeated in the month of September (4-0-2).
How It Happened
• In the first half the Leathernecks were putting on the pressure. Western Illinois got four shots on goal within the first 45.
• In the 30th minute
Mathis Pilon St-Louis found the back of the net with just a tap of the ball. The goal was set up by
Gonzalo Cuevas. He passed it off to
Junior Casillas, who passed it back to Cuevas for a shot that was tipped in by Pilon St-Louis.
• The Leathernecks got in four more shots on goal during the second half, that were all saved by
Nathanael Sallah.
• During the 66th minute
Wawa Palga was fouled in the box, giving the Mavericks a penalty kick opportunity.
Theo Klein took the kick and recorded the goal with a shot to the bottom right corner.
• Then again in the final seconds of the game,
Calvan Berteau drew a foul in the box, for the Mavericks' second PK of the match. Klein netted a brace and went 2-2 on the night with a rocket to the middle of the net.
• With the second successful penalty kick the Mavericks sealed the deal on the 3-0 conference win.
Inside the Box
• The Mavericks out-shot the Leathernecks 14-12 and but trailed shots on goal 8-6.
• Omaha had the upper hand with six corner kick opportunities, while holding Western Illinois to just four.
• Pilon St-Louis recorded his second goal of the season. While Casillas and Cuevas recorded their second assists of the season.
• Klein recorded a brace and is now 3-3 on penalty kicks.
• Klein led the team in shots (4) and shots on goal (3).
• Sallah recorded a career high eight saves and his second shutout of the season.
• Sallah now improves to a 2-0-0 record.
