Mavericks Drop First Half Lead to the Anteaters

Omaha, Neb. - The Omaha Mavericks drop their first home regular season match 2-1 to the UC Irvine Anteaters. The Mavericks held a one goal lead through the first half but it wasn't enough to outlast UCI in the second.

The Mavericks fall to 0-3-0 overall record on the season.

How It Happened
    • Thursday's match started off in favor of the Mavericks. As they put the first goal of the night in the net.
    • Theo Klein scored Omaha's first goal from the top of the circle in the 13th minute. The goal was assisted by Martin Lago who passed it to Klein across the pitch and Sokol Ymeraj who booted it up from the Maverick's defensive midfield zone.     • Lute Lillo Portero made one save during the first half to keep the score 1-0 after the first 45 minutes.
    • In the opening minutes of the second half the Mavericks gave up a goal off the corner kick and the Anteaters tied the match.
    • In the 63rd minute UC Irvine made a pass up the field to a lone forward who slipped one in the net to take a 2-1 lead. 
    • Lillo Portero made two more saves in the second half to hold the score at 2-1.
   Inside the Box
    • The Mavericks were out-shot 11-8, as well as out-shot 5-4 in shots on goal.
    • At the end of the 90 minutes the Mavericks took only one corner kick compared to UCI who took four. 
    • Klein scored his first goal of the season.
    • Lago and Ymeraj both picked up the first assists of the season. 
    • Mathis Pilon St.-Louis lead the team with two shots.
    • Lillo Portero made three saves and falls to a 0-3-0.

The Mavericks will continue their home stand on Monday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. to match up with Grand Canyon.
