Omaha Baseball Set for Crucial Week vs. Creighton and ORU

Apr 3, 2023

Leading Off
The Mavericks (10-11, 4-2) look to keep the momentum going as they head into one of the biggest weeks of the season, starting with a Tuesday night game vs. crosstown rival Creighton and ending with a three-game series vs. the reigning Summit League champion Oral Roberts.

Upcoming Schedule
Tuesday: 5:30 p.m. vs. Creighton
Thursday: 6:00 p.m. vs. Oral Roberts
Friday: 3 p.m. vs. Oral Roberts
Saturday: 1 p.m. vs. Oral Roberts

Around the Horn
  • After a midweek loss at No. 6 Arkansas, the Mavericks swept Northern Colorado to close out last week, outscoring the Bears 27-10 across all three games.
  • The big story was Preston Tenney's absolute gem on Saturday vs. UNC. The rookie had one of the most dominant starts by a Maverick in years, becoming the first Omaha pitcher to throw a complete game shutout since current pitching coach Payton Kinney back on April 17, 2018. Tenney struck out eight batters, including the last one of the day, and only allowed two hits and zero walks, needing just 108 pitches (84 strikes) to complete the game.
  • Not to be forgotten was Caleb Riedel's electric performance in game one of the series, as he recovered from a first-inning grand slam to shut out the Bears over the next 6.1 innings. Riedel's fastball was on point for the remainder of the game as he rode it to a career single-game conference high of 12 strikeouts.
  • After the first inning of the first game vs. Northern Colorado, Mavericks pitchers combined to throw 19 consecutive scoreless innings over the rest of the three-game series.
  • While the first two games of the series were dominated by Omaha's pitchers, the series finale saw the bats take center stage as the Mavericks tied their season high with 16 runs, recorded their most hits in a single game (22) in almost seven years, and had their most extra-base hits (nine) in over two years.
  • The Mavericks had six players record multiple hits on Sunday, and six players with at least one run scored and one RBI.
  • Haiden Hunt went 4-for-4 on Sunday with three runs scored and three doubles, the most doubles by any Maverick in a single game since Ryan Cate against Fort Wayne on March 25, 2017.
  • Devin Hurdle also had the first four-hit game of his career, going 4-for-5. He went 7-for-12 in the series overall.
  • Cam Frederick and Mike Boeve each had three runs scored and three RBIs in the series finale vs. Northern Colorado, while Eddie Satisky set a new career single-game high with three RBIs too on Sunday.
Scouting Creighton
Creighton enters this week at 11-9 after sweeping a three-game series against St. Thomas to get back over .500.

The Bluejays have four players currently batting above .300, led by Nolan Clifford (.338) who is also second on the team with 18 runs scored. Likewise, Jack Grace paces Creighton with six home runs, a .630 SLG and a .995 OPS.

Creighton's pitching staff is led by right hander Ryan Windham, who owns a 2.80 ERA and 28 strikeouts in seven starts. While the rest of their starters have been more inconsistent, the Bluejays bullpen more than makes up for it with Tommy Lamb (2.61 ERA, 10.1 IP) and Marc Lidd (2.35 ERA, 7.2 IP) leading the pack.

Head Coach Ed Servais is the winningest coach in Creighton baseball history at 630-372-1, while his career record of 812-454-2 is 21st among all Division I coaches. During his 20-year tenure with the Bluejays, he has led them to six NCAA Tournaments.

Scouting Oral Roberts
Oral Roberts is in first place in the Summit League at 20-9 overall and 6-0 in league play. Before coming to Omaha, they will face Oklahoma on Tuesday, April 4.

Five Golden Eagles are currently batting over .300, led by Jonah Cox's .441 AVG. Cox also leads the team with a 1.153 OPS, 10 doubles, and five triples. Meanwhile, Matt Hogan (.343/.422/.686) tops ORU with 10 home runs and 42 RBIs.

The Golden Eagles' starting rotation is the best in the Summit League, with three of their four primary starters sporting sub-4.00 ERAs (Brooks Fowler: 2.73, Harley Gollert: 3.41, and Joshua Caravalho: 3.26). Their bullpen is also incredibly effective, most notably in closer Cade Denton who owns a 1.38 ERA and five saves in 26.0 innings of work.

Ryan Folmar is in his 11th season leading the Golden Eagles and 20th overall with the program including his time as an assistant coach. During this career, Folmar has helped lead ORU to 15 NCAA Tournament appearances (five as head coach). He has also been named Summit League Coach of the Year five times.
