Mavericks Take Game 2 from Nebraska in 10-Inning Stunner

OMAHA, Neb. - Nebraska remains crimson and black for another day as the Mavericks took their second game of the year from the Huskers in a 10-inning, 6-5 victory in Lincoln.

Omaha (12-14, 4-5) improves to 2-0 against Nebraska (18-11-1, 4-2) this season and 4-2 over the past two seasons with one game left to play this year (April 25 at Tal Anderson Field).

Innings 1-3
The Mavericks got off to another strong start as Noah Greise ripped his second triple in as many games to bring home Mike Boeve to quickly make it 1-0. The next inning, Eddie Satisky reached third on a Husker's throwing error and Henry Zipay promptly made it 2-0 Mavericks with a sac fly to right.

Omaha's biggest hit of the day came in third, however, when Boeve just snuck one over the left field wall and around the foul pole for a two-run home run to give Omaha a 4-0 lead.

On the mound, Charlie Bell picked up right where he left off vs. Creighton and dominated the Huskers early on with three scoreless innings. His first inning was perhaps his most impressive, recovering after a lead-off single and striking out the next two batters, including one of the Big 10's top hitters in Max Anderson (1.245 OPS entering today). He also got some help from Eduardo Rosario who gunned down Brice Matthews to catch his first baserunner since, coincidentally, March 14 at the Huskers.

Innings 4-6
In the fifth, following lead-off singles from Boeve and Greise, Matt Goetzmann got Omaha back on the board with a sac fly to grow the lead to five runs. The Huskers, though, broke the shutout in the bottom of the inning on a one-out RBI double from Casey Burnham. A great snag by Zipay at short saved a run and got Omaha out of the inning with a 5-1 lead still intact. However, a two-run home run from Gabe Swanson cut Omaha's lead to two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Innings 7-10
Entering the eighth up 5-3, Omaha closer Rans Sanders came in and allowed his first earned run since March 2 on a solo home run, before surrendering the tying run with bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth as the Mavericks were mere inches away from turning the would-be game-winning double play.

In the top of 10th, the Mavericks quickly got the bases loaded with one out after a walk from Goetzmann and singles from Rosario and Zipay, culminating in the go-ahead sac fly from Zach Lechnir.

Down to the bottom of the inning, Wyatt Sellers came in to close things out. On seven pitches, he immediately fanned the first two batters as his fastball touched 94 mph on the second strikeout. Ahead 0-1 on the final batter, he induced a shallow fly ball which Drew Lechnir easily corralled in right for the final out.

Inside the Box Score
Making his 25th career appearance, Sellers has now earned his first ever save.

After going more than 200 plate appearances across 65 games and two seasons without hitting a triple, Greise now has two in his last two games played.

Boeve's home run in the third was the second of his career vs. Nebraska after launching a solo shot in his second ever at bat against the Huskers back on March 13, 2022.

Up Next
The Mavericks continue their road trip this weekend when they head up to Brookings for their first meeting of the season at South Dakota State.
