Tonight's series finale with the North Dakota Fighting Hawks was deadlocked at 0-0 for most of the game. All three goals were scored in the final 20 minutes of regulation as the Mavericks fall 2-1 in their regular season finale.
The Mavericks and Fighting Hawks will have some unfinished business to settle next weekend at Baxter Arena in the opening round the NCHC Playoffs. The Mavericks secured third place despite being swept by North Dakota this weekend.
The contest's first goal came at the 4:36 mark of the third period when Ethan Frisch solved Omaha netminder
Jake Kucharski who had a stellar performance stopping 30 of the 32 shots he faced. Junior winger
Matt Miller buried his second 3rd period equalizer of the weekend when he tied things up at 1-1 at 7:59 of the frame putting home a loose puck out front. Miller's 13th goal of the season was assisted by
Jack Randl and
Jake Pivonka. With 3:02 remaining in regulation, UND would score what would go on to be the game winning goal.
On the special teams side of things, the Mavericks held the nation's top power play to just one goal on seven attempts this weekend. UND went 0-3 tonight on the man advantage and had just two shots on net in those power plays.
Next weekend's 3 vs. 6 opening playoff round will be played at Baxter Arena in Omaha. The series will be a best-of-three series with the winner heading to St. Paul to play in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff.
