OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks split their doubleheader with North Dakota State today as they held on to take game one 7-6, before falling 2-7 in game two.
Omaha (7-10, 1-2) drops the series 1-2 to the Bison (5-18, 2-1) and will now have to wait until May 12 in Fargo before getting another shot at NDSU.
Game 1
The Mavericks struck first in the second inning after a Bison error made it two on and no outs, allowing
Eduardo Rosario to drive in
Eddie Satisky for the first run. Meanwhile,
Preston Tenney settled down after a shaky first to cruise through the second with a couple of strikeouts, before getting through the third on just six pitches.
Omaha then plated three more in the bottom of the third, starting with an RBI single from
Cam Frederick to bring home
Haiden Hunt who led off the inning with a double to left.
Mike Boeve then drew a walk to put Frederick in scoring position, where he was subsequently driven in by
Brennen Bales. Satisky would cap things off with a deep double to the right field corner to send Boeve home and make it 4-0 Mavericks.
In the fourth, Frederick knocked out NDSU's starter with his second RBI of the day on an opposite field single. The next inning,
Matt Goetzmann extended the lead with a sac fly to right.
The Bison got within two of Omaha in the sixth, though, scoring four runs on five hits. Bales, making his first start in left field, made a couple of great throws to get the Mavericks out of the inning as he gunned down a runner at home for out number two and threw out the final batter of the inning trying to stretch a single into a double.
After the Mavericks got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, a two-run home run from Druw Sackett in the seventh cut Omaha's lead to one. The Mavericks then brought in their closer
Rans Sanders to get a six-out save. He proceeded to throw a 1-2-3 eighth, striking out two on only 11 pitches. Then in the ninth he recorded two quick outs before working around a two-out double to complete the save and get Omaha even in the series.
Game 2
The Bison came out swinging and scored four runs in the first, all with two outs, while a sac fly from Bales got Omaha on the board in the bottom of the inning.
In the second,
Harrison Kreiling came in for his second appearance of the season and was on point, retiring six of the first seven batters he faced, with the lone base runner coming on a hit by pitch. Kreiling would surrender a run in the fourth on a groundout, but he later got himself out of the inning after taking a line drive off his foot, tracking it down, and making a diving flip to Satisky at first to get the third out.
Kreiling would follow up with a scoreless fifth, before allowing a two-out solo home run in the sixth, undoing the run Omaha scored in the bottom of the fifth on Boeve's RBI single. The Bison would go on to shutout the Mavericks over the final three innings as they took the rubber game of the series.
