FRESNO, Calif. - The Mavericks were dealt another blow on Saturday as they were defeated 13-4 by Fresno State on the road.
Omaha (0-6) is still looking for its first win of the season as the team drops its second consecutive series to begin 2023. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs (4-2) have won three in a row since losing to Michigan State to begin the week.
Innings 1-3
Despite
Devin Hurdle legging out the first triple of the year for the Mavericks in the top of the second, it was the Bulldogs who got on the board first on a one-out grand slam from Nikoh Mitchell off Omaha starter
Preston Tenney.
The next inning,
Mike Boeve would line a single to center to drove home
Matt Goetzmann for the first Mavericks run of the day. Goetzmann had quite the journey around the bases as he was hit by a pitch, then stole second, and finally advanced to third on a balk before Boeve's single.
Fresno State, though, erupted in the bottom of the third with nine runs to blow the game open with a 13-1 lead.
Innings 4-6
The highlight of the middle innings for Omaha was
Eduardo Rosario unloading on the first pitch he saw in the top of the fourth and launching his first home run of the season with a two-run shot to center.
Cooper Prososki also came into the game in the bottom of the fourth and proceeded to completely shut down the Bulldogs for the next three innings, needing only 31 pitches and allowing just two baserunners on two hits.
Innings 7-9
Prososki stayed efficient into the seventh inning as threw his third 1-2-3 inning of the day. After Hurdle drove in his first run of the year on a single to right in the top of the eighth, Prososki again retired the side in order on just six pitches, including a three-pitch strikeout of Bobby Blandford.
Inside the Box Score
Prososki had the longest relief outing by a Maverick this year with five innings pitched, also good for the second most consecutive shutout innings by a Maverick this year behind
Caleb Riedel's five IP in the series opener.
Rosario is the first Maverick of 2023 with a multi-RBI game thanks to his two-run homer.
Today marks the first time this season the Mavericks have recorded double-digit hits with 13. Their four runs are also the most they have had in a game yet.
Up Next
The Mavericks will wrap up their California road trip tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they play the final game of the series at Fresno State.
