Mavericks Wrap Up UCLA Series with Sunday Loss

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Mavericks (0-3) were unable to slow down UCLA (3-0) on Sunday afternoon as the Bruins downed them 8-1 to complete the three-game sweep.

Innings 1-3
Preston Tenney settled in nicely in his Mavericks debut, setting down the opposition in order in the bottom of a scoreless first. Though he allowed a two-run home run in the very next inning, Tenney showed incredible composure on the mound, inducing a 4-6-3 double play and a fly out to shut down the Bruins.

In the top of the third, Eduardo Rosario got Omaha's first hit with a leadoff single and then advanced to third on a wild pitch, only for UCLA's Kelly Austin to set down the next three Mavericks in order. Tenney followed suit and worked around a couple of walks to finish a scoreless third.

Innings 4-6
In the bottom of the fourth, after a leadoff walk and an error made it second and third with one out, Tenney held the Bruins to a single unearned run as he ended his day with four strong innings on 77 pitches.

Luke Gainer came in to relieve Tenney and tossed back-to-back scoreless innings in his Mavericks debut, striking out two in the bottom of the sixth. Likewise, UCLA also turned to their bullpen in the top of the sixth and immediately allowed the first two Mavericks to get on base, though, were again able to keep Omaha off the board.

Innings 7-9
After the Bruins tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh, Zach Lechnir finally broke the shutout in the top of the eighth with a solo shot to dead center for the first home run of the year for Omaha. UCLA would respond with a two-run homer of their own the next inning to make it 8-1 as they went on to close out the game and complete the sweep.

Inside the Box Score
In their Mavericks debuts, Tenney and Gainer combined for seven innings and allowed two earned runs each.

Lechnir's home run gave the Mavericks one extra base hit in each game in the series. Across all three games, Lechnir went 3-for-8 (.375).

With another hit today, Mike Boeve is the only Maverick to record a hit in each game of the series, going 4-for-12 (.333) with two doubles.

Up Next
The Mavericks will be back in action this Thursday at 8 p.m. when they continue their California road trip with the first of four games at Fresno State.
