No. 15 Mavericks Grab Three Points in Series Opener with Miami

The No. 15 Omaha Mavericks shut down the Miami RedHawks 3-1 in tonight's series opener behind goals from Jonny Tychocnick, Matt Miller and Cam Berg.

The Mavericks and RedHawks skated to a 0-0 tie after the opening 20 minutes. There was plenty of action in the 1st period as the Mavericks held a 13-11 lead in shots on goal. Tychonick's eighth goal of the 2022-23 campaign broke the deadlock at 13:28 of the 2nd when he took a Brock Bremer pass all the way in alone and buried the game's opening goal, five-hole. Rookie blueliner Jacob Guevin was credited with secondary assist.

Up 1-0 after 40 minutes of hockey, Matt Miller would extend the Mavericks lead over the RedHawks to 2-0 when he tipped a Tyler Weiss slapshot from the blueline out front on the power play. The 3rd period lamp lighter ties Miller's career high in single season goals at 10. Miami wouldn't go away easy as they pulled within one with 3:57 to play in regulation. Cam Berg would go on to put the game on ice with his empty net goal at 19:02 of the 3rd period. Berg corralled a loose puck at Omaha's blueline, won a foot race and walked the puck into the empty Miami net.

Stopping 27 of the 28 shots he faced tonight, Freshman goaltender secured his ninth victory of the season tonight. His streak of allowing two goals or less is now up to 12 games after allowing just one goal in tonight's contest.

With 41 shots on goal in tonight's contest, the Mavericks make it consecutive games with 40+ shots on net for the first time this season. They had 42 in last Saturday's tie with Colorado College. Omaha's special teams was special tonight as well. They went 5-for-6 on the penalty kill and added a power play goal. 14 of their 41 shots came on the man advantage tonight.

The Mavericks and RedHawks will faceoff tomorrow night for the final time of the regular season. Puck drop slated for 5:05 p.m. ET from Steve Cady Arena.
