CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - On a day when
Frankie Fidler made history in joining the 1000 Point Club, the Mavericks came just short of completing the comeback as they were downed 62-58 at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
Omaha drops to 5-6 on the season and 0-2 on their second and final Texas road trip, while the Islanders improve to 4-5.
Leaders for Omaha
Entering the day with 982 career points, Fidler needed just 18 to become the 43rd member of Omaha's 1000 Point Club and just the ninth to do so while playing his whole career in the Division I era. He ended the day with a team-high 24 points, thanks in large part to going 13-for-14 on free throws, tying him for eighth in program history for single-game free throws made. Fidler's historic night also included team-highs in rebounds (seven) and assists (three).
Meanwhile,
Jaeden Marshall was second in scoring with 13 points after going 3-for-8 from deep, while
Nick Davis scored 12 and tied
Tony Osburn with two steals.
Leaders for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi
The Islanders had three players score double-digits today, led by Dayne Prim who shot 6-for-9 with three 3-PT FGs for 19 points. Stephen Giwa was Corpus Christi's leading rebounder with a game-high 12, while Marion Humphrey led the team in assists with five.
Team Stats
Both teams were nearly tied in FG% and 3-PT FG%, as Omaha led in the former (35.6% vs. 32.8%) but trailed in the latter (24.1% vs. 23.5%). The Mavericks had a greater lead in FT% at 81.5% vs. 75.0%.
Inside the First Half
Defense took center stage to start the day as both teams managed to limit each other to less than 35 points and only nine field goals apiece. Omaha in particular heavily limited the Islanders' effectiveness from short range, holding them to just two points in the paint and crashing the boards for 15 defensive rebounds.
Biko Johnson, Osburn, Fidler, and Davis all had at least three defensive boards
Offensively, Fidler went 3-for-8 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the stripe to lead the Mavericks with 11 points, putting him just seven away from 1000 career points with a whole half left to play. Meanwhile, Davis inched closer to becoming the third Maverick to score 100 points this season as he shot 2-for-4, including the first bucket of the game at 17:45.
Inside the Second Half
Both teams continued to play solid defensive over the final 20 minutes, with Omaha adding another 12 defensive boards. Still, nine minutes in the Mavericks pulled within four points of the Islanders.
Marquel Sutton opened up scoring with a huge dunk a minute in, while Marshall added five more points, including his second three of the day at 15:39, and the Mavericks as a whole went 6-for-6 on free throws to make it 44-40.
With less than 10 minutes left, Omaha got within one of Corpus Christi after a pair of free throws from Davis and another Marshal triple made it 48-47 with 7:41 on the clock. Though the Islanders responded and went back up by six, four-straight free throws from Fidler, with the fourth being his 1000th point, made it a four-point game again at 5:16. One last Fidler free throw would cut the deficit to three with 1:52 left to play, but that would be all the Mavericks would get as the Islanders just barely held on to win.
Game Notes
- Fidler ended the day with 1006 career points, tying him for 40th all-time. Currently at 163 points on the season (14.7 ppg) and having scored 456 last season (14.8 ppg), a similar pace would put him at over 1300 points. That would rank Fidler in the program's top 15 and possibly as high as third place among Mavericks who only played in the D1 era.
- Davis' 12 points now give him exactly 100 on the season, making him the third Maverick behind Fidler and Sutton to reach the century mark this year. Along with Fidler he also topped 50 total rebounds on the season today.
