Shorthanded Mavericks Grab Two Big Points from No. 15 Huskies in Series Finale

Despite being shorthanded tonight due to injuries, the Mavericks battled the No. 15 St. Cloud State Huskies to a hard fought 2-2 tie. Omaha grabbed the extra NCHC point in the shootout defeating the Huskies 1-0.

It would be SCSU who would jump out to the early lead tonight scoring 5:06 into the game. Omaha's response came with 37 seconds left in the 1st period when Kirby Proctor took the puck a full 200-feet to light lamp and even things at 1-1. Proctor's third goal of the season was unassisted.

During a dominant 2nd period stretch, Ty Mueller gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead after he pickpocketed a Husky skater and snuck a puck high short side for his team leading sixth goal of the campaign. It wouldn't be until the 14:58 mark of the middle frame that SCSU would register their first shot on net of the period.

St. Cloud State's equalizer came with 2:31 left in the 2nd period. Both squads would trade blows back-and-forth during the 3rd period, but neither were able to find twine.

In the extra five-minute OT period, Omaha outshot St. Cloud State 3-1 and won all four faceoff draws.

The Mavericks elected to defer to start the shootout. Ty Mueller was Omaha's second shooter, and the Vancouver Canucks draft pick fired the shootout winning shot left post and in. Sophomore netminder Simon Latkoczy sealed the shootout victory as he stopped the final Husky attempt to blank SCSU on all three of their shots.
For the second night in a row, the Mavericks won the faceoff battle. Outdrawing SCSU 29-22, Mueller went 16-7 and Nolan Sullivan went 10-5.

On the campaign, Omaha moves to 3-0-1 after dropping a Friday contest and 6-1-1 on Saturday's.

The Mavericks enter 2024 at 9-5-2. They'll open the new year against the UMass Lowell Riverhawks at the Desert Hockey Classic in Tempe, Arizona on January 5.
