Quick Hits
  • The Mavericks improved to 6-6 on the season and moved to 5-0 at home with an 88-80 win over Stetson. The game was the 100th ever at Baxter Arena, with Omaha 63-37 in that span.
  • The victory marked the first time this year that the Mavericks won despite their starters being outscored by the opposition. That said, Omaha's bench held a massive 31-4 scoring advantage over Stetson's, as well as outshooting them 52.1% to 43.3% from the field. The Mavericks also had a significant edge in free throws as they made 33, their most since the 2018-19 season, while the Hatters only had 18.
  • Frankie Fidler led the way with his 10th double-digit scoring game of the season after going 3-for-4 on threes and 6-6 from the stripe to finish with 19 points. Nick Davis shot 7-for-8 to tie Fidler with 19 points, setting a new season-high in the process.
  • Biko Johnson had his best game yet as a Maverick, going a perfect 10-for-10 on free throws to top double-digit points for the first time with 15. He also had three assists and two steals.
  • Marquel Sutton blocked a career-high three shots against the Hatters, becoming the first Maverick to record at least three blocks in a game since Dylan Brougham vs. North Dakota on January 12, 2023.
  • JJ White was one of three Mavericks (Davis and Sutton) to pull down seven rebounds in the game, tying his career high.
  • Grant Stubblefield, Marcel Bryant, Nick Davis, and Biko Johnson are Omaha's top newcomers coming into this season.
  • Stubblefield was named 6A Player of the Year and First Team All-State while at Blue Valley Northwest and Bryant was named the Austin Area Player of the Year at Cedar Ridge. Johnson is coming off his second season at Western Nebraska CC where he was named All-Conference and All-Nebraska, while Davis is fresh off winning GAC Defensive Player of the Year and a trip to the Sweet 16 of the Division II NCAA Tournament with Southern Nazarene.
  • Fidler was Omaha's lone All-Summit honoree last season, earning an Honorable Mention. He led Omaha in scoring (14.7 ppg), rebounding (5.8 rpg), steals (1.2 spg), and free throw percentage (.887), with his FT% in particular ranking in the NCAA's top-25 for most of the season.
  • Head Coach Chris Crutchfield has a 25-38 career record. It marks his third season as a head coach and second with the Mavericks.

Scouting the Cal Poly Mustangs
Following their 81-77 overtime win over San Jose State on November 29, the Mustangs have lost four straight against Idaho, Oregon State, Weber State, and Eastern Washington to drop to 3-8 on the season.

Senior guard Kobe Sanders is just nine points away from reaching 200 (17.4 ppg) thanks to a .432 FG%, .351 3-PT FG%, and .892 FT%. Fifth year guard Jarred Hyder is Cal Poly's second leading scorer with 114 points (10.4 ppg) and is the only other Mustang to own a FT% above .800 (.826), while freshman guard Quentin Jones rounds out the 100-point trio with 109 (9.4 ppg) and the best 3-PT FG% on the team (.429). Hyder's 27 assists are also the most on the team, as are Jones' 17 steals and eight blocks.

Head Coach John Smith took over the Mustangs in 2019-20 and helped the team win its first game in the Big West Tournament in seven years during his second season. Prior to Cal Poly, he was an associate head coach with Cal State Fullerton from 2013-19, guiding them to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018.
