Mavericks Battle but Fall Just Short to UIC Flames

Omaha, Neb. - The Omaha Mavericks fall in a 40-minute battle to the UIC Flames, 95-89. Despite the loss, the Mavericks had their highest-scoring game, with several season highs. 

Omaha drops to a 2-5 overall record on the season. 
 
Leaders For Omaha
Aaliyah Stanley had the first 30-point game of the season, pacing Friday's game with 33. Stanley went 9-of-17 on her field goals, sunk 7-of-9 three-pointers, and went a perfect 8-of-8 on the free throw line. Kennedi Grant and Deanay Watson also put up double digits, with 17 and 12 respectively. Grant led with six rebounds and three assists and Grace Cave paced with four steals. 
  
Leaders for UIC 
Five Flames finished the game with double digits, being led by Tara Green and Dais'Ja Trotter with 16 each. Sara Zabrecky led with six rebounds and Kristina Young paced with nine assists. 

Team Stats
Omaha was out-shot on field goals ( 28-of-59) to 56.1% (32-of-57). The Mavericks had a stellar night behind the arc, out-shooting the Flames 57.1% (12-of-21) to 41.2% (7-of-17). Omaha also beat the UIC on the free throw line (77.8, 21-of-27 vs. 75%, 24-of-32).

Inside the First Quarter
Omaha set the tone with an early three-pointer by Grace Cave, assisted by Kennedi Grant at 9:22). After falling behind by six, Watson sunk a jumper in the paint to close the gap to four. Cave scored her second bucket of the game at 5:27 with an assist to Polina Nikulochkina

After giving up a three-pointer, the Flames responded with nine straight points, with three layups and a basket behind the arc. UIC ended the first quarter ahead by nine after a three-pointer at 0:45 by Zabrecky. 
 
Inside the Second Quarter
The Mavericks started the quarter off again with a quick three-pointer by Grant at 9:48, assisted by Cora Olsen. Stanley put back another three at 8:55 shrinking the gap to five. Two last free throws at 0:05 by Watson got the Mavericks to their smallest margin of four during the second quarter. 

UIC responded to Grant's initial bucket with a jumper at 9:15 to get their scoring starting in the second. Omaha looked to end the half down by five but a quick layup off after the in-bound at the buzzer secured the score 45-39 after the first 20. The Flame scored 23 points after going 64.3% on field goal attempts, sinking 9-of-14. 

Inside the Third Quarter
Grant got the Maverick's first points in the second half with a layup in the paint at 8:35. Brooklyn Smith made her first layup of the game at 6:02 after missing her initial layup and rebounding her attempt. Olsen had an and-one from her jumper made at 4:25. Stanley went all-net on her three-point buzzer beater. 

The Flames were the first to get on the board in the third quarter with a layup by Jaida McCloud at 9:42 assisted by Young. After a three-pointer at 5:51, the Flames were up by 15 and held their largest lead of the game thus far. UIC snuck in five points in the final minute of the third with two free throws and a three-pointer. At the end of the quarter, UIC led 73-62. 
 
Inside the Fourth Quarter
Stanley had her strongest quarter of the game. She sunk her first three-pointer at 8:35. Stanley added two more throughout the fourth, going a perfect 3-of-3 behind the arc and went 2-of-2 on the line, accounting for 11 of the 27 points. On the Flame's second attempt at a shot, Watson made a massive block in the paint. The Mavericks chipped away at the gap, but with a shower of fouls, Cave, Grant, and P. Nikulochkina were all fouled out by the end of the game. The fourth quarter was Omaha's highest-scoring period and held the highest shot percentages. 

McCloud got it started with a layup at 9:26. The Flames played good defense, not allowing Omaha to score their second bucket until 5:09. Though carrying a tough defensive front, UIC had their lowest scoring period of 22 points and shots 50% of their field goals attempted.
