Mavericks' Season Ends in Summit League Championship

Brookings, S.D.— No. 4 Omaha fell to No. 2 South Dakota State in the 2023 Summit League Championship title match. The Mavericks ended their season with a record of 7-5-7 after the 1-0 loss at Fishback Park in Brookings, S.D., on Sunday. 

After the match, Emilie Erland, Sophia Green, and Regan Zimmers were named to the All-Tournament Team by the Summit League. Erland and Green recorded a goal and an assist each throughout the tournament as they led the team with three points in postseason play. Zimmers led the Mavericks to a shutout in the quarterfinal round against South Dakota and netted her first goal of the year in the semifinal at Denver.  

How it Happened 

  • Emma Konsmo started in net for the first time this postseason as the sophomore made her first save in the fifth minute. 

  • Sophia Green took the first shot of the game for the Mavericks in the 28th minute, but it was saved by the Jacks' keeper Jocelyn Tanner. 

  • Green tested Tanner with another good scoring chance in the 31st minute, but that shot was saved as well. 

  • Omaha took one more shot in the first half off the foot of Regan Zimmers, but it was stopped by Tanner as the teams went into half time in a scoreless tie. 

  • SDSU's Gusman took a long shot in the 67th minute and scored to give the Jacks the lead. (0-1)  

  • Omaha was unable to answer in the final 23 minutes as SDSU earned the Summit League title and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. 

Inside the Box 

  • The Mavericks outshot the Jackrabbits 6-5, including 3-2 in shots on goal. 

  • Omaha was called for 11 fouls, nearly doubling South Dakota State's six fouls. 

  • The Mavericks were caught offsides four times, and the Jackrabbits did not stray offsides once. 

  • Emma Konsmo made her fourth Summit League Tournament start and second in the championship match as the sophomore made one save against SDSU on Sunday. 

  • It was the third title match appearance in four seasons for the Mavericks, who won last year's Summit League Championship over Oral Roberts in Omaha. It marked the fourth championship game for the Mavericks under head coach Tim Walters, who has a record of 1-3 in the League's final match of the year.

  • Omaha's season is over after the 1-0 loss to South Dakota State in the Summit League Championship match. The Mavericks finished with a record of 7-5-7, and earned a share of third place in the Summit League with after finishing 3-1-4 in conference play. As the No. 4 seed, Omaha traveled to Denver, Colo., for the quarterfinal and semifinal matches of the 2023 Summit League Championship. They defeated No. 5 South Dakota by a score of 2-0, advancing to the semifinal round where they upset No. 1 Denver 3-2 in penalty kicks after a 2-2 draw in regulation.
