Victor Mancini's first career goal was the difference maker tonight as the Omaha Mavericks knocked off the No. 11 Western Michigan Broncos 3-2 in overtime.
Mancini took possession of the puck at the Mavericks blueline and never looked back. The Saginaw, Michigan native hit the afterburners to fly by the Bronco defenseman and lifted the puck top shelf for the game winning goal with 40 seconds left in overtime.
After a scoreless first period, Junior centerman
Ty Mueller got the Mavericks on the board first tonight with a breakaway goal at the 5:56 mark of the middle frame. The lamp lighter was Mueller's first of the campaign. The Ludtke brothers tallied the assists on the opening goal.
Western would go on to even things at 1-1 24 seconds later. The Mavericks and Broncos entered the final 20 minutes of regulation all squared away.
With 5:10 to play in regulation, Graduate forward
Jack Randl picked the perfect time to bury his first goal of the season. Randl fired a shot home from the slot to put Omaha up 2-1 late on Western. Senior forwards
Matt Miller and
Jimmy Glynn both registered their first points of the season with the assists. With their goalie pulled, Western Michigan was able to equalize the contest one more time with a tipped shot out front at the 19:49 mark of the 3
rd period.
Sophomore netminder
Simon Latkoczy made several game saving stops this evening. He backed stopped the Mavericks to their third win of the season turning away 33 of the 35 shots he faced.
Omaha's penalty kill stayed hot as they successfully killed all three of Western's power play opportunities.
The Mavericks continue their homestand next weekend when they welcome the Long Island Sharks to Baxter Arena next weekend.
