Klein Scores Game Winner, Mavericks Win First Road Match of the Season

Omaha, Neb. -- The Omaha Mavericks notched their first road win of the season in a 2-1 victory over the Western Illinois Leathernecks. The Mavericks gained an early lead and was able to pull ahead in the second, securing their sixth win of the season.  

The Mavericks have improved to 6-6-4 overall and 3-2-2 in Summit League play. With today's win the Mavericks have clinched a postseason berth, and will see action in Tulsa in two weeks. 
 
How It Happened
    • The Mavericks got off to a strong start, controlling the ball a majority of the half. 
    • Nathanael Sallah made an early save in the fourth minute to keep the game scoreless. 
    • In the 17th minute, Junior Casillas carried the ball up the offensive zone, passing it off to Martin Lago on the left wing just outside the box. Lago connected with Ede Gramberg in the box where he fired a shot past the goalkeeper. With his goal, the Mavericks were up 1-0 early in the first.     • The Leathernecks responded back quickly with a goal in the 19th minute, making it an even 1-1 match. 
    • Omaha's two blocked shots was the only action to happen in the remaining minutes of the first half. 
    • In the 55th minute, Martin Lago was ready to take a shot just in front of the net but was tripped. With a foul called in the box, Theo Klein would set up for a penalty kick. Klein scored his fifth penalty kick of the season and gave the Mavericks their game-winning goal. 
    • Omaha played a strong defensive game the rest of the match, only allowing four additional shots, with only one on goal. 
    • At the end of the 90 minutes, the Mavericks had defeated the Leathernecks 2-1. 
 
Inside the Box
    • The Mavericks out-shot the Leathernecks 9-8.
    • Omaha took five corner kicks and did not give up a single corner to Western Illinois. 
    • The Mavericks were called for 14 fouls, compared to the Leathernecks' five. 
    • Casillas, Gramberg, and Luke Smith are recorded two shots.
    • Sallah made two saves in today's match.
    • Sallah improves to a 4-3-2 record on the season.

The Omaha Mavericks will play their final regular season match next Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. at Caniglia Field.
