Mavericks Secure Sweep of Bulldogs with Barrage of 3rd Period Goals

The Omaha Mavericks erupted for four goals in the final 2:32 of tonight's series finale with Minnesota Duluth to secure a weekend sweep and down the Bulldogs 6-1.

The Mavericks and Bulldogs were battling it out to a 2-1 game for most of the evening. Freshman forward Ray Fust got the night rolling early when he backhanded home his first goal of the evening just 2:17 into the game. 3:07 later, Jake Pivonka fired home his second goal of the weekend to extend the Mavericks lead to 2-0. Isaac Howard scored the lone goal of the night for the Bulldogs at 11:36 of the 1st period.

Slipec's breakaway goal was was created when Ray Fust skied a puck out of the zone that landed perfectly in front of Slipec who went in all alone and buried the biggest goal of his young career. 11seconds later, Nolan Sullivan won a draw back to Jonny Tychonick and for the second time in as many weeks, he fired a puck 200-feet down the ice into an empty UMD cage. Omaha opened the floodgates 49 seconds later when Slipec netted his second goal of the evening on the backdoor of the UMD net. The Mavericks put the nail in the coffin when Fust tapped in his second goal of the night with just nine seconds left in regulation. It's the first multi-point game of his career.

Joining Fust (2-1=3) with a multi-point game was Jacob Slipec (2g), Jake Pivonka (1g, 1a) and Tyler Weiss (2a).

Freshman netminder Simon Latkoczy set a career high for saves with 31 in route to his fifth win of the season to improve to 5-2-1. It's the sixth game in a row where he has allowed two goals or less.

The highlight of the evening was when senior goaltender Jacob Zab made his collegiate debut with 1:32 remaining in regulation. The Mentor, Ohio native made his first career save and was given the game puck from head coach Mike Gabinet.

The Mavericks will close out their current six-game home stand next weekend when they welcome the Miami RedHawks to Baxter Arena.
