OMAHA, Neb. - The Bluejays prevailed in the annual Dodge Street Derby vs. the Mavericks Wednesday night. Creighton scored six goals for the third time this season as it beat Omaha 6-1 at Caniglia Field.
With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 3-2-1 overall.
How It Happened
- The Bluejays saw two off-target headers in the first three minutes of action helping set pace for Wednesday's meeting.
- The 10th minute saw their first attempt on goal, while Mathis Pilon St-Louis tallied Omaha's first in the 28th minute.
- At the 31st minute mark, Giorgio Probo set up for a corner kick. He sent the ball into the goal area that was headed away by a Maverick. The ball landed in Charles Auguste's possession who found the back of the net for Creighton's first goal of the evening.
- Two minutes later, the Jays doubled their lead on a goal from Jackson Castro, while Owen O'Malley made it 3-0 in the 42nd minute. The Jays took that three-goal edge into the break.
- Nathanael Sallah tallied a pair of saves in the early minutes of the second half before Castro netted his second goal of the night in the 53rd minute.
- Duncan McGuire got in on the action in the 62nd minute making it a 5-0 game in Creighton's favor.
- Off the bench, Ryan Brakke made an impact in the 80th minute scoring the sixth goal for the Jays.
- Gonzalo Cuevas helped Omaha avoid a shutout in the 88th minute scoring on a penalty kick. Creighton went on to win 6-1.
Inside the Box
- Cuevas now has four points on the season. Tonight was his first career goal to go with two previously recorded assists.
- Creighton led 21-8 on shots, 10-3 on goal.
- Sam Pollard led the Mavericks with two shots on the night.
- Sallah made four saves in goal and falls to 3-2-1 on the year.
- It was the third highest attended crowd in program history with 1,996 fans. The record was set on Sept. 26, 2017 with 4,986 fans vs. Creighton. Second on the list was Aug. 11, 2018 with 3,948 vs. Creighton.
