OMAHA, Neb. - Head men's soccer coach
Donovan Dowling collected his first win at the helm Sunday night as the Mavericks downed the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 3-1.
Kenji Mboma Dem tallied five points, while
Mathis Pilon St-Louis netted the game winner.
Omaha improves to 1-1-0 on the year.
How It Happened
- It was Omaha's game right out of the kickoff Sunday night. Ede Gramberg nearly made it a 1-0 game in the 4th minute with a shot that beat the keeper only to be saved by a diving Oakland defender.
- Three minutes later, Mboma Dem tallied his first look on target that was saved by Finn Jurak in goal.
- Theo Klein and Owen Smith traded attempts in the 18th and 21st minute that resulted in saves for both teams.
- Mboma Dem then finally broke through the defense and netted an Omaha goal in the 27th minute off an assist from Ede Gramberg. Mboma Dem fired from the top of the box sinking the ball in the high right corner.
- Nearly four minutes later, Mboma Dem fed the ball to St-Louis for Omaha's second goal of the night. St-Louis broke away taking the pass to the top left of the box shaking off an Oakland defender to make it a 2-0 lead.
- Ville Ahola had a look in the 41st minute for the Grizzlies, but Nathanael Sallah tallied the save, and Omaha took the lead into the break.
- Omaha recorded four shots in the first 12 minutes of action and made it 3-0 in the 69th minute.
- Four Mavericks lined the goal area with Theo Klein feeding Mboma Dem in the low left. Mboma Dem used one touch for a low goal and his second of the match.
- Over the next 10 minutes, the Grizzlies had several close attempts. Sallah made one save while two other shots went off the woodwork narrowly missing their target.
- Oakland broke the scoreless streak in the 88th minute with a goal by Dawson Schrum. It was their final shot of the match, and Omaha went on to win 3-1.

- Sunday's win marks the first of head coach Dowling's career.
- Mboma Dem finished with a career-high five points on two goals and one assist.
