Omaha Spoils WIU's Senior Day

MACOMB, Ill. - Omaha opened the final weekend of regular season action with a doubleheader sweep at Western Illinois. The Mavericks run ruled the Leathernecks, 9-0, in game one. They snuck out a 4-2 win in game two.

The Mavericks improve to 28-12 overall and 16-4 in conference play.

Game One: Omaha 9, Western Illinois 0 (5 inn.)
How It Happened
  • The Mavericks put up two runs in each of the first three innings to take a quick 6-0 lead over the Leathernecks. Rachel Weber plated the first pair in the first inning. She found the gap up the middle for a single allowing Lynsey Tucker and Izzy Eltze to cross home plate.
  • Tucker and Eltze recorded back-to-back infield singles in the second and both scored again for Omaha. Jamie White doubled to left center for the two RBI and to make it 4-0.
  • In the third inning, Jaelle Johnson led off with a single to center. She advanced to second in Olivia Aden's single to left. Johnson went on to steal third and capitalized on a throwing error to score the fifth run. Maggie O'Brien's single would plate the final run of the inning scoring Aden. for a 6-0 lead.
  • White and Weber connected again in the fourth for Omaha each tallying their second hit and third RBI of the game. White singled through the right side to score Tucker, while Weber's single up the middle plated White for an 8-0 lead.
  • Weber made it 9-0 before the end of the fourth inning on a dropped fly ball by the Leathernecks. The Mavericks went on to run rule in five, 9-0.

Inside the Box Score
  • Meyer earned the win in the circle. She improves to 19-5 on the year. It also marks her 11th shutout of the season and Omaha's 15th.
  • She finished with eight strikeouts and is only eight away from breaking the single-season program record.
  • Tucker finished 3-for-3 at the plate. She scored three runs and stole two bases.
  • White and Weber each tallied two hits and three RBI.

Game Two: Omaha 4, Western Illinois 2
How It Happened
  • Omaha's bats remained hot to start the second game. Eltze led off with a single and put the first run on the board scoring on Lexi Burkhardt's single later in the inning.
  • The Leathernecks tied it in the bottom of the second inning. Rea doubled to right field to get on base. She scored on Hudson's single to left on the next at bat.
  • In the top of the third, Eltze continued to have a day. This time she tripled to right field. Tucker then laid down a sac bunt to score Eltze for a 2-1 advantage.
  • Eltze struck again in the fifth. She hit the first homer of the series with a solo blast to right center. It gave the Mavericks a 3-1 lead at the end of five.
  • Omaha added its final run in the seventh inning. O'Brien stole third base and made her way in following a throwing error by the catcher. The Mavericks led 4-1.
  • WIU attempted a late rally in the seventh. Muczenyski tripled to right field helping cut the lead, 4-2, as Drager scored for the Leathernecks. The rally fell short and Omaha wins.

Inside the Box Score
  • Eltze finished 4-for-4 at the plate, including a triple and homer. She scored three times.
  • Burkhardt recorded two hits, while Tucker and O'Brien tallied one each.
  • Sydney Nuismer earned her fifth win in the circle. She retired seven batters for a season-high. It was just two shy of matching her career-high.
