Mavericks Force Winner-Take-All, Jackrabbits Prevail As Champs

VERMILLION, S.D. - No. 2 Omaha shutout top-seeded South Dakota State 3-0 Sunday morning to force a winner-take-all championship game Sunday afternoon. The Jackrabbits rallied for a 5-0 win in game two to claim the Summit League Championship for the second straight season.

The Mavericks finish the year 32-14. 

Game One: Omaha 3, South Dakota State 0
How It Happened
  • Sunday shaped up to be a pitcher's duel until the Omaha offense came alive for three runs in the fifth inning.
  • The Mavericks recorded four hits in the fifth. Lynsey Tucker helped plate Sierra Leonetti with a single to right field for the first Maverick run. A wild pitch from Glanzer then scored Izzy Eltze for the second run of the inning. Jamie White and Lexi Burkhardt followed up with back-to-back singles. White's scored Tucker for the 3-0 lead.
  • Kamryn Meyer continued to dominate in the circle, and the Jackrabbits wouldn't get a chance at the plate until the bottom of the seventh. Masterson and Osmundson got on base for SDSU bringing the tying run up to bat twice. Omaha's defense stepped up, and the Mavericks forced a winner-take-all with a 3-0 win.
Inside the Box Score
  • This marked the second consecutive season the Mavericks and Jackrabbits have met in the championship game. Both teams have forced a winner-take-all situation.
  • Meyer pitched the complete game and retired 10 Jackrabbits for her 11th shutout of the season. Meyer improves to 22-6.
  • Four of Omaha's five hits came in the fifth inning. Five Mavericks combined for the effort.
  • Weber had the only multi-base hit of the game with her 12th double of the year.

How It Happened
  • The Jackrabbits started to find their stride early in game two vs. the Mavericks. They used two hits in the third to plate the first run of the game.
  • Daugherty hit a hard ball to short for the first hit of the inning. She made her way around to third and would score on a sac fly from R. Carrillo for a 1-0 edge.
  • SDSU tacked on three more runs in the fifth highlighted by a two-run homer from Halvorson to make it 4-0 for the Jacks.
  • The Jackrabbits added an insurance run in the seventh with a single to second base. Tucker made the diving play to keep it in the infield, but Osmundson would score. 
  • Omaha gained a base runner in the bottom of the seventh with a White walk, but Kniesche got the next three Mavericks swinging for the win.

  • Omaha's 32 wins marks the most wins in a single season since the 2014 season's 33.
  • Weber recorded the only Omaha hit.
  • Meyer made the start. She finishes the season at 22-7.
  • Meyer posted 285 strikeouts on the year bringing her career total to 495, which sits fifth on the all-time career lists.
  • Sydney Hampton and Sydney Nuismer came in for relief splitting time in the circle.
  • Meyer, White, Burkhardt, and Nuismer all claimed Summit League All-Tournament Team recognition.
