Maverick Offense Bounces Back in 10-0 Rout

Omaha's offense, blanked on three hits in Friday's series opener, showed up with a purpose.

The Mavericks (13-15) scored in each of the first four innings in Saturday's 10-0 victory over Northern Colorado (7-23) at Tal Anderon Field in a game that ended early due to the Summit League's run rule.

Harrison Denk had three hits, including a two-run single that broke the game open in the second, and Mike Boeve drove in four runs as Omaha bounce back from a forgettable opener with a decisive victory.

"Our guys came into batting practice today on a mission," Maverick coach Evan Porter said. "They were looking to change some things. They knew they had to work harder, and you could see that in their approach to the game today, offensively."

Omaha already led 1-0 when it loaded the bases to open the second against UNC's Iain Isdale. The Bears starter nearly escaped the jam, then Denk took his 3-2 pitch to right field for a two-out, two-run single.

"Harrison worked it to a full count and pushed one through the right side," Porer said. "That would've been a huge momentum swing the other way had we not scored at all that inning. Credit Harrison for coming through with a big hit- and not trying to get too big – to put across some runs in the second."

Boeve followed with an opposite-field single to plate Devin Hurdle to make it 4-0 early. He then launched a three-run home run to center field to extend the lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

"We knew we had to come out focused, obviously, after last night. It helps having a warm day and having the wind shift to blowing out," Boeve said. "I just try to stay simple. The RBI opportunities aren't very frequent right now. If I get a good pitch to hit, I want to put a good swing on it. That's what I did."

The offensive outburst gave Maverick starter Charlie Bell (3-3) a nice cushion to work with. The right-hander tossed six shutout innings while striking out eight. Bell scattered five hits while walking two.

"[Starting pitching] has been huge for our ability to stay in games," Porter said. "It helps us get deep into ball games. We've played a lot of close ones. It's a great problem to have when you're trying to get work for guys who aren't pitching as much. That means your starters are going pretty deep into the game."

Reliever Jarrett Blunt pitched a 1-2-3 seventh before the Mavericks ended the game with two runs in the bottom half. Will Hanafan's double to right field brought Hurdle in with the final run.
