Timmins, Mavericks Leave ORU with Rare Series Win

TULSA, Okla. – Prior to Friday, Omaha's success in the regular season at Oral Roberts had been minimal. In fact, it had won only once – behind former All-American pitcher Payton Kinney in 2019 – in 15 tries.

The Mavericks (11-14) shunned that history this weekend, handing the Golden Eagles a loss in a Summit League series at home. Omaha blanked ORU for the second time in three days Sunday in an 8-0 finale.

Mark Timmins (1-1) tossed seven shutout innings, and the Mavericks put the finishing touches on a series win with a six-run outburst in the seventh. Omaha's starting pitching was stellar throughout the series. Caleb Riedel threw six scoreless innings Friday. Charlie Bell took a shutout into the sixth Saturday.

"Our starting pitchers did a fabulous job of setting the tone in each game," Omaha coach Evan Porter said. "And, today, Mark Timmins was just brilliant. He's been really good [lately]. … And he just had another quality outing today. And our bullpen picked him up right after that for the last two innings."

Timmins escaped trouble early in the game. He recorded consecutive strikeouts with two runners in scoring position to end the second. And he got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third with a double play.

The Mavericks scored twice against ORU starter Isaac Coffey in the fourth and then erupted for six runs in the seventh. Devin Hurdle struck the decisive blow with a two-out, bases-loaded triple that doubled the lead to 6-0. Eduardo Rosario followed with a two-run homer that capped Omaha's scoring surge.

"Today was a good offensive showing for us," said Porter, whose team scored once Friday and Saturday. "Our guys did a really good job of sticking with it after a couple of one-run scoring games. Today, they came through in some big moments. I think we scored all our runs in that six-run inning with two outs."

Sunday's result pulled the Mavericks, who have won both of their conference series, into a second-place tie in the league standings with ORU at 4-2. North Dakota State leads the Summit League alone at 5-1.

"We're at three weekends in a row where we've won a series," Porter said. "That's going to continue to be our goal going into each weekend. It's tough to win on the road. And I'm really proud of our guys for finding a way to win a series down here in Tulsa."
