TULSA, Okla. –
Drew Reetz homered in the second inning to give Omaha an early lead.
As it turned out, it was the only run the Mavericks needed in a huge series-opening road victory.
Caleb Riedel and
Joey Machado combined for a four-hit shutout as Omaha (10-13) blanked preseason Summit League favorite Oral Roberts (16-10) 1-0 Friday in their series opener at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
The victory was the 100th in the career of sixth-year head coach
Evan Porter, who guided his alma mater to its first NCAA Division I regional by winning the Summit League title on the same field in May of 2019.
Omaha tallied only six hits Friday, but the one by Reetz off ORU starter Evan Kowalski decided the game.
The Mavericks got six shutout frames of three-hit ball from Riedel (2-1), who extended his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 21. The lefty battled back from a leadoff walk in the first three innings.
Machado allowed only one hit in his first save, and Omaha got the batter out on the play. Mac McCroskey singled to left field to open the ninth but was thrown out at second by
Harrison Denk while trying to stretch it into a double. Initially called 'safe,' the ruling was overturned after a video review.
The next two batters went down in order, with Machado getting Jackson Loftin to fly out to end it.
