WICHITA, Kan. – The individual match scores were tight, even though the final score wasn't.
Omaha took a 7-0 defeat at Wichita State Thursday in which nearly every match was tightly contested.
The lone win for the day for the Mavericks (6-9) came at No. 1 doubles, where
Matt Hulme and
Mikhail Korkunov edged nationally-ranked Kristof Minarik and Alex Richards 7-5. The Shockers (7-5) claimed the doubles point, however, when their team topped
Hugo Piles Ballester and
Todd Chen in a tiebreaker.
Wichita State then swept the six singles matches, winning in three sets in the Nos. 1-3 positions.
"We came out and played well in the doubles, but just couldn't close the match at [No.] 2 doubles," Omaha coach
Matthew Barlow said. "In the singles, we had plenty of opportunities late in sets, but couldn't finish the job. We will have to capitalize on big points to compete with Oklahoma State."
The Mavericks will face OSU in Stillwater, Okla., on Friday at 5 p.m.
