NORMAL, Ill. – Omaha came up short in its bid for a second consecutive road win this week as Illinois State rallied for a 5-2 victory Thursday in Summit League competition at the Evergreen Racquet Club.
The Mavericks, who won at Northern Illinois Wednesday, grabbed an early 2-1 lead when
Todd Chen beat ISU's Pol Botifoll Rius 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Chen had teamed up with
Victor Sklenka earlier for a No. 3 doubles victory that secured that point for Omaha.
Matt Hulme and
Mikhail Korkunov had already claimed a win in the No. 1 position.
The Redbirds, however, took the final four singles matches, eventually clinching when Melker Isaksson topped Korkunov 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. All singles matches were decided in two sets except the No. 6 battle between
Alvaro Quintana and ISU's Arvid Hjalte, which Hjalte won in a tiebreaker after Illinois State had clinched the overall victory that dropped the Mavericks to 0-2 in the Summit.
"We are quickly figuring out that there are no off days in the Summit," Omaha coach
Matthew Barlow said. "The teams are good, they fight, and they won't give you anything for free. Hopefully, we learned something from this one today, because we know that Drake and Denver will bring that same fight."
